If you can't manage to use up your PAYG balance then before transfer you can always donate it to charity.

That seems like a good idea.

    And this ... ?
With a 3-5 day delivery slot, will I be without a phone until it arrives?

No, you will be with your old phone, then with two phones.
And they will tell you the exact day when the number will be ported to the new sim.

IIRC, Sainsbury's are doing the Huawei Ascend 300Y (?) for £35. Bit of a bargain that imo.
It's the Huawei Ascend Y330. On their spec list they have forgotten the processor! https://www.phoneshopbysainsburys.co.uk/huawei-ascend-y330.html?___SID=U

I had their Ascend 300 and found it very unresponsive and clumsy to use. The battery life meant a recharge every day. I got the Moto G for £60 in Tesco. Much easier to use. Unlocked it, put a three 1-2-3 payg sim into it. Motorola have an app that transfers all your settings from your old phone - it's an absolute doddle. You hold the new phone in front of the old one and it's no hassle at all.

I hardly ever need to top the credit up and I only update using wifi at home. As I'm a light user I rarely have to recharge the battery more than once or twice a week.

So another vote for Moto G and three payg from me.

It's worth saying that it will be mission impossible to buy Moto G for this price.

I think they were clearing stock when I bought it this summer to make way for the new Moto model.

If OP has any credit that'll be lost on his old service I'd give another vote for donating it to charity. I texted it to Macmillan Cancer support by texting MOBI99 £(how much you want to give) to 70070.

They could always go for the Moto E, it's available for around £60 normally and is currently £45 at Vodafone (unlocking codes for £1.29 on eBay).

If you want a new phone, it can be cheaper to buy a new sim-free or PAYG phone and use on a sim-only contract or on PAYG.

you can buy Moto E for £60 ... at Argos and use it, say, on '3' PAYG.
I have a £20 Argos voucher .... this could work out as a good choice ...

what is the difference between SIM free & PAYG here?

    Argos purchase costs are ...
    SIM free
    Moto G = £149.95
    Moto E = £89.95
    Samsung Galaxy S3 mini £119.95
    Samsung Galaxy Fame £84.95
    Samsung Galaxy Ace £119.95

Do I need SIM free to choose any network at all ... including the recommended Three or giffgaff?
What network / deal would buying PAYG with Argos take me on to?

Sim-free is just a phone that will work on any network it's compatible with. For smartphones compatibility isn't a problem.

A PAYG phone comes with a sim and a top-up included in the total price. In can be locked to the network that sim it's sold with (depends on the retailer).
