Not really, but what's the point in having a smartphone then?

Also - we will use it out & about as there are now many places with free wi-fi aren't there.
And earlier in the thread I had it confirmed that such use doesn't go on to your data usage count for this reason / this type of use.
We are not going to use it travelling with business or anything.
But on social travel, in hotels maybe, cafes, friends homes etc where we can access wi-fi.

We sometimes both want / need to use it at the same time.
I have a feeling that you overestimate usability of a smartphone for internet.

    Sorry, I've been unclear ...
    we have a computer ...
I'm looking to get one tablet, and a new phone for each of us.
Computer & tablet at home for web browsing etc.
    Tablet for some mobility.
Mobiles for ultra-mobility, phone / text and some other use (photos, browsing etc).

Personally, I almost never use my smartphone for 'browsing'.
For checking e-mails - yes - but not for replying unless it's absolutely unavoidable.
For decent casual photos I'd prefer something like Nicon Coolpix

or Samsung Galaxy Zoom that you can get for ~£150 instead of an overpriced iPhone.

Beware, that iPhone warranty is pathetic one year unless you buy directly from Apple. And, as you were concerned about the battery, Apple charge ~£60 for replacing it IIRC.

That said, don't take my word for anything.
  • I think an iphone would be over the top for your needs, and far too expensive.

My own solution is an unlocked phone - I used to live abroad so would swap sims - and now I use Giff Gaff using the £7.50 package. The data allowance is enough, and as someone else commented, you don't really want to browse with a phone: the weather, football scores and maybe checking an address is about my limit. GPS and mapping is useful though. The main reason I got it in the first place was to check email, but I certainly don't write them on it if I can avoid it.

Your idea about using wi-fi is a good one: relatives, social club and my pre-football pub are amongst the ones I've set up. Widely available in holiday resorts too.

    Ok folks

I am convinced about not getting an iphone

Moto G not available from Tesco ... out of stock, no stock pending.
So, at the £10/month price point they have a few ... any other decent contenders?
Or should I forsake the better quality of the Moto G and get a Moto E for £7.50/month?

The Moto E is a good option as it has a microSD slot.

  • IIRC, Sainsbury's are doing the Huawei Ascend 300Y (?) for £35. Bit of a bargain that imo.
The atmosphere is currently filled with hypocrisy so thick that it could be sliced, wrapped, and sold in supermarkets for a decent price and labeled, 'Wholegrain Left-Wing, Middle-Class, Politically-Correct Organic Hypocrisy'.

So, in the transaction process, Tesco want my old number to enable it to be transferred at the point of purchase.
With a 3-5 day delivery slot, will I be without a phone until it arrives?
Should I use all existing PAYG credit up too?
  • If you can't manage to use up your PAYG balance then before transfer you can always donate it to charity.
