You were asked why you wanted a contract, not PAYG, but you didn't answer this question.

I thought I had with this reply ...

My reason for thinking I don't want PAYG is we are currently on an old Virgin PAYG that is expensive per minute & per text.
Are the new PAYG better value?

To add to that ... I am making an assumption that PAYG costs more in use and that as my wife and I are using our mobiles more than we used to do, the costs are rising / have risen to the point where a contract would represent better value ... and ... offer the chance to get new up to date handsets - something both of us really need as our very very old ones are on their last legs and have very poor battery whilst out and about.

Also ... can I ask this once again try to get an answer as I'm still unsure ...

Does wi-fi in a free wi-fi place or at home count towards data usage?

no it doesn't - but when you first get your new smartphones you must sort out the wifi settings (ie set up wifi, only update on wifi, no automatic sync on etc etc).

And that will ensure no 'accidental' interweb usage that could end up costing me whilst out & about.
I have heard of that - turning it off and only using wi-fi.
    Thanks..

    ps

Thanks to every one so far.

Don't know how expensive old Virgin PAYG is, but "Three 321" that I mentioned above is 3p/min, 2p/text, 1p/Mb. Also, many providers offer PAYG bundles that in terms of the costs are close to contracts, but don't tie you in for 1-2 years, and some offer free calls within their network.
All depends on the actual usage, and it's worth doing some calculations instead of making assumptions.

Again, buying a handset outright and using it on PAYG or a sim-only contract can be cheaper in terms of the total cost - depending on the actual usage.

You are right about working from knowledge not assumptions.
I have just checked with my Virgin mobile account.
10p to text to another Virgin phone.
12p to text to another network.
    25p / minute for a phone call.

    Yikes!

I will look back over the previous suggestions in this thread that I may have skimmed over.

In that case, would you recommend I not buy the Motorola mentioned previously ... due to problems already listed?

You decide. 'Drawbacks' isn't the same as 'problems'. Even many expensive phones have non-removable batteries nowadays.

I don't see any drawback to a Moto G. Over 4 times cheaper than a flagship while it offers nothing less for an infrequent user.

re: the battery ... I don't want to get too concerned if the problem is slight ...

and will 'light use' mean the battery has a longer life anyway?

Difficult to say. Every battery has a limited number of cycles.
Normally you charge a smartphone every day. With 'light use' you can possibly do this every two days.

Anyway, if you buy a new battery I don't think that it will be very expensive to get it replaced in a shop: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fd3AZSXhOf8&feature=youtu.be
