How to obtain credit reports

I'm not sure if there is less data sent from some of the CRA's to CheckMyFile than they would give you if you went direct (CheckMyFile say on their site you'll get most data from CallCredit, a bit less from Equifax and only public visible data from Experian).
The data is incomplete. IMO, credit reports, when ordered directly from Experian, Equifax and CallCredit are more valuable. This, after all, is the information UK lenders see, when you apply for new credit facilities.People who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.0 -
Hi. I'm not sure if this has been brought up already. I couldn't see it in the inital post and it's not in Martins Credit Reports Article. In a nutshell Callcredit report can be fully obtained entirely for free using the same method as Experian and Equifax. Details here

Apologies if it's already been mentioned but I could never find the info, atleast directly from MSE myself, hence the digging elsewhere. If it hasn't, hope it helps.0 -
How does this save money? This info's available for £2 per paper copy when ordered directly from the credit reference agencies. (See the *How to obtain credit reports* sticky
)
My bad... I just did the sums, and at £2 a go you could get 29.9 credit reports a year for the same price!
I suppose I figured (as I've used Experian online) it's quite nice to just be able to log in when you want to and see your report.
But you're right... time-saving is not money-saving.0 -

Yes, it's very convenient, but most of us only really need to check our files about once a year.
Btw, once you have your hard copies, the CRAs seem happy to answer questions over the phone if you quote your reference numbers. So if, for instance, you wanted to check that particular items had since been updated, there's no need to order further copies of your credit reportsPeople who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.0 -

Credit Reference Agencies (CRAs) have a statutory obligation to provide you with your credit file and charge no more than £2. These reports are paper based and will be posted to you.
You can apply online for your reports from the two leading CRAs using the following links:
http://www.wiseconsumer.uk.experian.com
https://www.econsumer.equifax.co.uk/consumer/uk/gb_consumerletter.ehtml
Alternatively, CRAs also offer online reports and other products for a charge. In my opinion only the reports are valuable, additional services like "credit ratings" are expensive and are of little use to most people. As they say though, "your mileage may vary".
Both Equifax and Experian offer a 30 day free trial of their online subscription services, you can apply online via these links.
https://www.creditexpert.co.uk/UK/Order1_1.aspx
https://www.econsumer.equifax.co.uk/consumer/uk/order.ehtml?prod_cd=UKESNG&pri_opt=UKESNG_5999_ANNUAL_TRL
If at the end of thirty days you do not wish to continue with the subscription you should contact the CRA and cancel, if you fail to do so you will be charged the annual fee (approx £60). These services are expensive but they not only offer you the valuable information contained in your credit reports, they also offer a means to combat identity theft and fraud.
Hope this helps.
I have not been with them 30 days yet so do I try to cancel again on the 30th day or what...I was under the impression this wasn't going to cost me any money at all...now it seems it will...not very money saving is it...

I signed up for 2 free 30 day trials, CreditExpert & Equifax. Both won't let me cancel at all. I have not been with them 30 days yet, so do I try to cancel again on the 30th day or what? I was under the impression this wasn't going to cost me any money at all. Now it seems it will. Not very money saving, is it?
I signed up for both of these trials and cancelled afterwards without difficulty. There's certainly no need to wait for 30 days to do thisPeople who don't know their rights, don't actually have those rights.0 -

Yes there is a way to protect yourself from ID Theft for next to nothing.
Check this out: Free ID Protection:
It's worth obtaining your Credit Files prior to using the above system.
There are two reasons for doing this:
1. Is to check the Integrity of your Credit File.
2. Is just in case you have to use some of the Notice of Correction Factily (allows you to add up to 200 words on your file), to explain something in your file to those accessing it.
Once in situ the above system:
Deters Attacks on Your Files.
Alerts banks/lenders etc to attempted Application Fraud by an ID theif on your account.
If a crook chances their hand the system protects you. You can easily prove it wasn't you who submitted a particular applicaton.
Last of all, unlike any other system, the lender has evidence which can be given to the police which may identify the perpetrator instantly or at a later date.
To sum up.
If you check your Files and put this system in situ you may never need to check your file again.0
