    Yes they can do.

The reason for this is some lenders provide information to Experian, some to Equifax and some to both. Some also use Call Credit too.

That is why it is always best to check all three CRA's.

i ordered my credit file with all three CRA- had no problem getting my epxerian one, but both equifax and call credit couldnt verify my address as i had only moved recently- they had requested old bank statements from previous addresses but i destroyed all this in the move- i have paid a £9.95 charge to call credit before they advised me they couldnt verify my address, i have emailed them and asked for a refund, explaining that i dont have the information they have requested but they havent replied- did this on 30/12/2007- i have emailed them again today- any advice??thanks

Moving address and getting hold of YOUR credit report proves a problem. Therefore you must assume this is when you are most vulnerable to ID Theft.

Make sure you are protected 24/7, 365 no matter how many times you move (very applicable if your in HM Forces, more so due to recent events).

The Simple Way to Foil ID Theft.

You want to proactively deter others using your personal information for personal financial gain. The above achieves this.

If some does apply then you want to Prove it wasnt you who submitted an application, or be warned of a fraudulent application made by someone using your details. The above achieves this too.

The main additional benefit is it will finger theives.
  • I read courtesy of Martin, that as a Capital One customer I was entitled to two free searches from Equifax and while, that has proved to be true, t was quite a struggle to get them so I have detailed what I found below.

Firstly on the Equifax site there is no mention whatsoever of this. There are also no phone numbers or email addresses to ask them! On Capital One's site there is a contact number (0800 0665 825). On following the instructions Equifax gave me I was duly charged £3.95 per month on my credit card! I rang back and was told that the information previously given was wrong, that they would cancel the charge & credit me and that I should have gone to a special web page; (www.equifax.co.uk/capitalone/index.html). This I did, only to get a message saying that because I had cancelled within 90 days, I couldn't re-apply!

To be fair to Equifax, they did go to a lot of trouble and it was sorted eventually so I do now have my two free checks.

I have now logged in and had a look at my credit report so thank you Martin for that.
  • I've just seen my first ever credit report (wow I'm a big girl now) and I'm concerned that I've apparently been searched by 'GB Group' ref. 'money laundering'. Does anyone know why this might be?

I've been searching my credit applications and can't seem to find anything suggesting that I applied for any new accounts at that time. I'd been working at my co. for months before the search too. And I don't know! But it was Sept last year, so not long ago and I really, really want to know why! I've never had any problems with the police etc. either so what is it?!! Please let me know, pplleeaassee.

On the credit file will be the full details of who conducted the search. The write and ask them why they did the search and who gave them permission.

  • No companies are detailed except the GB Group! However, I've now contacted the GB Group directly and they were really helpful. It seems it's a common problem with the credit report agency that I used - they get a lot of concerned callers because not enough information is given and because it refers to money laundering, which is apparently nothing to do with it!

GB are going to contact the agency I used to tell them to give clearer information. They advised me to buy a different report, which should, as inmypocketnottheirs said, give the name of the company that requested the search. I would love to know who it is in my case as I didn't give anyone my permission to do this as far as I can recall and GB advised me that, legally, my permission must be requested.

I was also told (in case anyone else gets the same thing happen to them) that the search was recorded because it left a footprint, not because it had an impact on my credit status - apparently.

The reason being 'Money Laundering', 'ID Enquiries', and other non-credit type searches are classed as 'unrecorded enquires'.

What that means is they are only visible to yourself and the credit reference agency, ie other lenders will not see these searches when they search your file.
