Can I get HD if I route the signal through a blu ray player? I'm not desperate to watch HD channels, it just seems silly that if I can receive them not to watch them.

A Bluray player would give you an HD picture on the Bluray film.
    not TV channels
Nothing but an HD tuner will give you HD freeview

I hope it's not to mean to say that you still sound somwhat confused?

It's been said already, but to clarify, neither of your TVs have a an HD tuner, therefore cannot ever receive HD Freeview.

The 'HD Ready' and 'full HD' merely identify the image the screen can display and not the signal it can receive.

Adding a Sky box or Bluray player and connecting to the HDMI socket will give you an HD picture from that source, but the only way to receive Freeview HD is to add a seperate Freeview HD box or buy a new TV!

To be fair to the op it is very confusing not helped by the way tvs are sold they clearly display they can receive freeview and they are hd. You could ask a salesman is it hd "yes" does it receive free view "yes" HOWEVER this is NOT the same as receiving freeview hd and unless you ask that specific question the salesman is unlikely to point this fact out!
  • It confuses the hell out of a lot of people, many of whom bought HD Ready TVs with Freeview thinking that they had everything they needed to get the Freeview HD channels. I think that even the sellers did not always understand how it all works.

I reckon half the UK population is confused and bamboozled on the subject of digital TV full stop. Manufacturers and the relevant government department have all conspired to trick us into regular upgrades of equipment since On Digital started what is now Freeview in about 1998. The early boxes stopped working a couple of years ago when they changed the specification of SD transmissions. Now gradually they will force everyone to upgrade to HD boxes or TVs with built-in HD receivers so that they can switch off the SD signals. In a few year's time they will launch Freeview Super HD and the whole upgrade con will start again.

At least prices have come down since 1998. :)

  • OP needs to buy a separate Freeview HD tuner/decoder. A Blu-Ray player or the built in tuner in his TV will never provide the HD channels.

On the plus side, if he purchases a Freeview PVR it will also be able to record.
