Some sort of splash back thing. As you say a bit like wet wall. 

The quarry tiles on the floor are staying but will be covered over by some sort of board & the new floor will go on top. 

The splash back stuff is way cheaper than tiles. 

My ex F-I-L did all the tiling including the floor again over 30 years ago.

Is it worth getting other quotes?

is it just the labour that makes the cost so much higher? If it is it might be worth talking to your contractor about whether you might be able to do it in phases to spread the cost? So buy all the units up front (so they all match) but have the units fitted / kitchen done in two phases, six months apart perhaps to give you time to pull the other £2K together?

No I am ok with it. It’s just quite a bit more than I thought. Total cost of this work will be the same cost as my first mortgage in 1982.  

I just need to work out the gap & how to cover it. 

Other tradespeople have a reputation locally for dotting between jobs but I would not be able to cope with that. I trust the joiners will come when they say & they will work fully on the job in hand. 

The labour is 2k more than I thought it might be.

My friend has a small kitchen in her new house and she spent £12000 on a new kitchen 😯 it's nothing too special either. No fitted white good etc just an oven and hob. I was in shock at the price. She also didn't have flooring fitted with it or tiles! She's still tile-less now as saving for it. 
It's made me rethink all the work I want done here 😯

My first mortgage was back in 1969 & I expect my new kitchen to be around 3 times that at least, but then that house is now selling for over 80 times what it was back then.
