Couldn't find any mention of topups on that Argos link, Scrounger. On the last link, what does this mean on O2's tariff ?
    £1 a day
    (£3/MB
    up to
    max £1 a
    day)

When mobile phones were first introduced, I believe that (a large?) part of the top up went towards the service, rather like line rental on a home phone.
Yes, it was called.... 'line rental' I believe :) It was abolished for PAYG over a decade ago I recall, which prompted me to ditch my landline. Whether or not it was a large part depended entirely on how many of those expensive minutes you used.
  • No 3g phone required if you use this cheap provider.

http://www.gtmobile.co.uk/ a sub brand of Lyca i believe runs over O2.

I just clicked on the link - no joy as there are too many people trying. :D From memory, I think it said £10 top-up required.

I bought one using Fast Track, so no £10 top up. :) It came with an EE SIM.

I also bought the unlock Scrounger mentioned. Not sure whether I need that SIM (or another, or none) when I get the code. I guess it will have instructions.

    See it now Kernel?

I think it is a reference to O2's 'Web Daily' rates.

Should the OP wish to use an old handset not compatible with 3...then either Sainsbury's (Vodafone) or Coop (Orange/EE) mobile are competitive.

Both are 8p per minute for calls and 4p per text; both offer £5 top-ups.

Tesco mobile only offer a minimum of £10 top-ups IIRC

But both need a £10 top up.

" See under topping up phone .The minimum top-up is £10."

    Buy a top-up voucher from Sainsbury’s or any outlet displaying the green top-up logo: they’re available in values of £10, £15, £20, £25, £30 or £50.

Asda and Talk Mobile offer £5 top ups i believe with reasonable rates.

Your FastTrack link was the Argos one I was referring to.

The point I was making is that surely '£3/MB up to max £1 a day' is a misprint. Maybe 3p/MB would make more sense.

I'm not surprised they don't mention a potential 'loophole'.

    Apparently not:
You will be charged at a rate of £3 per MB until you have spent £1 on data usage.
So: £1 per 333kB (= 3p per 10kB) up to 1MB - and then then FREE (up to 50 Meg).

    That tariff is just bizarre!
