Just collected second hand car today and have a few problems

it is not unusual for a car on a dealers lot to have the interior lights turned off due to people opening the doors for long periods and running the battery flat0 -

If it was just the switch being off it will be interesting to see if the OP comes back to admit it!
I'd swap the bulb and if it still doesn't work, then take it back as it could be a broken wire somewhere and tracing that could be a pain, plus you want to be sure it isn't because it is trapped somewhere or rubbing other wires but beyond that, nothing a bit of common sense shouldn't sort. Probably cost more to drive back to the dealer than it would for the bulb.What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -

I worked alongside a car sales.
Complaint 1 - valve caps weren't all the same.
Complaint 2 - interior light dims when locking.
Buy a new car if you want perfection, even then you'll be lucky.0 -
Probably not something for the garage to worry about. As others have said - you may have had the switch off, or you can change the bulb yourself. Usually fairly straightforward on most vehicles; not a big cost - unless your really tight!0

Point is, at no point past the first few posts did anyone attempt to understand the problem or help - it was all a load of assumptive and/or facetious posts after that point.
I think the problem is with the very first post and the O/P being more concerned about "their rights" to get it remedied, rather than doing some simple checking themselves to see if its just a 50p bulb that needs replaced.
Its a sad reflection these days of a lot of purchasers, and one of the main reasons i'm glad i'm out of motor trading.0 -
Reminds me of a customer complaining of a grinding noise when turning corner in his BMW.
He said it "was not what he expected of a high quality car" and demanded we put the problem right, lent him a car etc..
Invited him down and no noise.. Infact, everytime he came down the noise wasnt there.. Then the next day we'd get the phone call "getting sick of this noise now, blah, blah.."
Came down.. no noise. We never heard the noise at all in our ownership until one day his wife was passing and thought she'd pop in to show us this "noise"
turned out to be their house keys/keyrings getting caught behind the steering wheel. But everytime he brought the car in to show us, he just used the spare key, so no other keys were present.
Or the guy that phoned in a rage one evening claiming to have "total electrical failure" on his Saab 93 and wanted to know what we "were gunna do about it.."
So I went out to see him, took my A frame... started the car and pressed the "night" button on the dash to turn all his dash board light back on...0 -

I don't disagree, I used to sell cars at the bottom end of the scale (sub £1000) and the closer you get to scrap value sale price, the worse the buyer used to get.
The problem is that the internet serves as a first port of call, winding people up or mocking them only serves to worsen the situation and doesn't really help. It could well be something very simple, but if it's someone who has literally no technical knowledge and/or has been told by the famous 'guy at the pub' that he 'once had this [insert fictitious horror story here]' then it's just the norm.
Unfortunately, the vast majority of the motor trade rely heavily on the people who know less than useful amounts about the simplest stuff (i.e. the likes of Halfords who charge to fit number plates, fuses and simple bulbs) so it's all a product of (to an extent) the trade's own desire.
It was just an exercise of encouraging a more productive outlook on questions like his, rather than perhaps a smidge of condescension from a few people.0 -

I can't believe how many responses i received to this post. I can quite imagine that garages do get some awkward customers, but I am sure customers sometimes get a raw deal too.Just to update you and clarify a few things. I am a none technical female, who was just asking a respectful question after struggling to drive my new car home in the pitch dark. I could not see where any of the controls were and was not shown them before leaving the garage. I was not given a manual with the car and did not have a light in the car to read it anyway. Thanks to a kind poster on here, In the daylight I could see that the light had been switched off at the garage. In answer to some other posts.......Yes I did have a couple of other issues (The radio was not one of them, but that was very witty). Within 2 hours of leaving the garage I discovered the boot would not stay up and fell down onto the back of my neck, the sevice had not been recorded in the book and of course the manual was missing. I called the garage while I was still out about these things and they agreed to remedy them. I was just checking if this particular potential fault was something I should be adding to the list, or if it was down to me to sort out......Nothing more. I wish the garage had switched the lights back on when they had finished the service earlier in the day though, as I felt very vulnerable in the car park in the dark struggling to find the controls.
