NatWest Debit card cannot be used a Pay at Pump ?

According to one of the staff members at my local branch my NatWest Debit card will not work at Pay at Pump, nor on a train etc.
I was quite surprised by this as I thought it would, she said only Credit cards will work at these places and not Debit Cards.
I have not tried it as I don't want to be embarrassed so I just wondered if it was true or something has been changed ?.
My account is a NatWest Platinum account and Debit card is purple and begins 4751 29, it is also contactless.
Many Thanks.

Why would you be embarrassed as you are not interacting with a human when paying at the pump?
However you should not use a debit card to pay at the pump because it will eat up £99 or £150 of your money, even if you only pump £5 of fuel. It will then take up to 7 days for your money to be released.
As pay at pump is an online transaction, I would think that all debit cards would work. If buying on the train then Visa Electrons tend not to work, so it would depend on what type of Natwest card you had (I'm not familiar with any Natwest products)0 -

This is wrong, UK pumps check the card and do a £1 test charge.0 -

Wrong. And wrong again.0 -
I've copied this from Natwest T&C's......................
15.3.4 If you have a Debit card that displays the Visa Debit logo and starts with the numbers 4751
27, 4751 28, 4757 55 or 4757 54, you will only be able to use your card at a retailer or supplier
of services where they can authorise the transaction with us at the time of the transaction
being made. If this is not possible the transaction will be declined.
This may have been what the staff member was referring to, although pay at pump transactions generally test the account by putting £1 pending at the time (although the full amount of fuel used will debit the account when the payment is taken)
Try the pay at pump, you will just have to go to the kiosk if it declines, at least you will know for sure then.
Hope this helps

HI if you have the basic natwest account then you can not use it - if you have select restriceted silver account same as.
if you have a select account if you ring up and ask for a debit card they should replace yours for a new contact less one?0 -

The OP has already stated that it is a contactless card and is the purple one.
