    I would imagine it would matter if it's your only local petrol station and your card doesn't work there...
    If it was an Asda with no kiosk it wouldn't matter as your card would be declined so no fuel would be dispensed!

    As a safety measure make sure you have some cash or another method of payment with you.

    However to answer the question:

    Its only the NatWest debit cards that start with the following can not be used a pay pumps:

    * 4751 27
    * 4751 28
    * 4757 55
    * 4757 54

    For RBS Customers its:

    * 4751 16
    * 4762 30
    * 4762 31
    * 4762 34

    Hi,
    Mines is 4751 29, so I should be okay.

    HI if you have the basic natwest account then you can not use it - if you have select restriceted silver account same as.

    if you have a select account if you ring up and ask for a debit card they should replace yours for a new contact less one?

    Hi,
    No I have a Select Platinum Account, and the card I have is already Contact less.

    Why would you be embarrassed as you are not interacting with a human when paying at the pump?

    However you should not use a debit card to pay at the pump because it will eat up £99 or £150 of your money, even if you only pump £5 of fuel. It will then take up to 7 days for your money to be released.

    As pay at pump is an online transaction, I would think that all debit cards would work. If buying on the train then Visa Electrons tend not to work, so it would depend on what type of Natwest card you had (I'm not familiar with any Natwest products)

    Hi, I was meaning embarrassed because the card would not work and ASDA are completely unmanned so no option to simply go in and pay.

    Hi,
    Firstly thanks to everyone who has taken the time and trouble to reply, my Local pay at the pump is ASDA, but a few miles away there is a Tesco and Morrisons, so I think I will give one of those a go, at at least if it does not work I can just go in and pay. I do also have the Natwest platinum credit card, so if the worse comes to the worse I can still pay.

    I was just so sure that Debit cards would work, but I guess the only way to find out is to try. I did phone up and ask but I don't think they understood the question let alone provide an answer.

    Mine is a 4751 29 and I have been using it at Pay at the Pumps for several years.

    This is wrong, UK pumps check the card and do a £1 test charge.

    Sorry but you cannot do that - pumps have a minimum dispensing value of up to 5l and as petrol and diesel are higher than this...

    On the other hand you are right, there should be no restriction on using a debit card, especially if it is contactless as the OP states

    Contactless has nothing to do with it.

    Some pumps can do 2L

    I investigated this today with a debit card and my available balance dropped by £1, but I was able to pump 2L. (I then used a credit card for the rest)

    Hi,
    Just to let everyone know I have used the card at ASDA, Tesco and Morrisons Pay at pump and it works fine. So I have no idea what the Natwest Staff member mean't.

    But as a side note I notice when I use the card as a contactless card and at some retailers with chip & pin my balance and available balance does not drop until the transaction actually comes off my account a few days later.
