If it was only for a few minutes, (ie, nipping to the shop) I wouldn't have an issue with it. I just can't understand why he wants to have the children, but would be working. I certainly wouldn't be happy.

The NSPCC recommend that a child under 13 shouldn't be left alone, and a child under 16 should not be left to look after younger siblings.

Personally, I'd have to say to him that unless he takes time off work or arranges proper childcare that you can verify, you will be unable to agree to his request.

At 13 I woudl have been fine on my own but as mentioned above, it is the added responsibility of looking after a younger sibling which makes most people think it is not a grand idea.

  • As well as whatever you think, has anyone asked the 13 year old if she's happy to be 'in charge' ?
Bit of an assumption if you ask me , and incidentally I wouldn't trust a 13 year old girl to be in charge of a younger sibling.
Not because they aren't competent, my daughter would have been devising dark and devious methods of torturing her brother at that age !

I let my 13 yo babysit the 9yo for up to 4 hours every now and then, the difference is that they are at home and know what neighbours they can go to in an emergency, plus they get on fairly well and are both quite sensible. I wouldn't leave them all day though
