This is standard practice accross the hotel industry, and is by no means strange or dodgy. They take your card details to guarantee the reservation. What this basically means is if you don't turn up they will charge the first night to your credit card.

This is standard practice in hotel booking T & C's. You can cancel your hotel room at no cost up to 4pm (usually) the day of arrival, by contacting the hotel. However if you simply choose not to turn up and not tell the hotel they will charge the first night to your card. Its just something to protect the hotels, and stop people booking and then simply not arriving. Like I said you can still cancel penalty free just by letting them know. That way they can make the room available again. It will all be in the booking T&C's of the website/hotel.

If your not happy with this you will have trouble finding a hotel anywhere in the world. Unless you want to pay on your card upfront like some websites make you do.

As bagand96 explained this is standard procedure amongst most hotels. I don't see how you would find this strange
