Have a great break in Italy Caterina. Would love to go there again, haven't been for about 5 or 6 years but don't think we'll make it again for another couple of years.

Just updated signature, spent £71.02 so far this month, slightly over where I'd like to be but free Hog Roast tonight at dh's works! Have planned all my menu's for the month. First time I've planned more than a month, so will see how that goes.

I'm still buying my semi-skimmed in A*di. Maybe my maths is out but I worked it out as
If you buy 4 pints that equals 2.27 litres so at £1.00 that's around 44 pence a litre.
In A*di I am buying 2 litre packs for 78 pence so 39 pence a litre.
As I buy two packs every week I reckon I'm saving 20 pence a week or one free a month.
Please tell me if I've worked it out wrong

    Lynne,
I thought milk in Aldi is 95p for a 2 litre bottle?
I've just checked my receipts and it 95p for 2.27 litres in my local one!

I think the confusion is arising because of the units: lynnejk is talking about buying LITRES of milk, while Mrs Cheshire and I are talking about buying PINTS.

4 pints = 2.27 litres so indeed 78p for 2 litres does work out cheaper, but I've never seen it in my local Aldi, and it's not showing on mySupermarket - the only supermarket I know of that sells milk in 2 litre cartons is Morrisons at 88p which works out more expensive than 4 pints at 95p. However cheaper milk can be obtained from Iceland who sell 4 pints for 89p, which works out at 39p/litre or 22p per pint.

Plus the other reason I suggested a 4 pint carton was that it would fit nicely into four 1 pint cartons (as well as being considerably less than the OP is currently paying)!!

    Sorry I don't know.

I sometimes use LOVEFOODHATEWASTE but more often ALLRECIPES or just go onto google and ask 'what can i make with........' and click enter.

You can waste pass lots of hours doing this  no, seriously it does help give you some ideas.

You could, of course, always ask on here as I am sure you won't be surprised that there are lots of good imaginative cooks on here who are used to making the most of left-overs.

Hope you all have a thrifty Thursday

Thanks very much for your response. I love Lovefoodhatewaste I don't know why that didn't occur to me. Thanks again.

  • Many thanks for the support the first step is the hardest isn't it. We are in a strange position on the island as food prices are either normal, ridiculously high when the boats are delayed or ridiculously cheap when the food finally gets through and is either no longer part of a promotion in the supermarkets or too close to its sell by date to be put out for sale at proper price so I have to re-train myself not to buy it unless we can use it within a reasonable time. Not easy is it?
  • LOVE FOOD HATE WASTE is great, type in the food they give you recipes - great idea
  • Another £4.69 today, milk, onions, spices - which I thought I'd got but must have culled when I moved house grrr.
  • It's so weird going shopping for the odd bits when you have a menu planned and all the big bits already in. I only needed some onions and mushrooms but couldn't help feeling like I needed something else! I bought a small bottle of red for £1 to put in my spaghetti bolognese tonight, I have half a bottle of red for drinking :)

05/10 £61.48 online delivery £0.80 bread, they never pick bakery bread for some reason so I picked it up myself.
06/10 £24.41 A&C £2.09 on aforementioned red wine, mushrooms and onions.

  • Hi all would like to join this challenge :).

My budget for the month is #100 - that should read 100 pounds but for some reason the pound sign comes up as a '#'.

To date i've spent #21.69 / #100.00 and i've a few more essentials to buy today, so i've not started the month well. Having said that i'm collecting all receipts for the month to check exactly where the cash is going.

I've promised my self i wont do any further food shopping until ive used up everything first. Should keep me going for a week with enough to bring to work.

Im enjoying the challenge alot, so thanks for running the thread and thanks for all the tips and contributions. :T
