Never, two weeks off when I left school and started a job. 44 Now and have had 4 jobs, the current one i've been at 13 years.

Reading the other posts - maybe i've been very lucky!

From the age of 16 to 48 I always had a job, gradually working my way up the ladder.
Then I became ill, and during the period where I was being diagnosed and treated in hospital, my employer (of nearly two years) decided to get rid of me.
For the last eight years I have been relying on scraps of work - temp/contracts etc. My last one was a couple of months ago, and I am not counted as unemployed. The problem is, that with all the temp work and gaps between jobs, employers look down on you.
  • 10 weeks but out of choice. Took redundancy from last job, where I was a hb and Ctb assessor for 15 years and now working part time at a housing association which I love! It's made me realise how much I really really hated my last job and I should have left after a year cause I have hated the last 14 years there lol!!! I am grateful for my knowledge of benefits and welfare reform but that's it :D
  • I've never been out of work, but I've lived in fear of losing my job for years because I've been working for greedy employers who shave a little bit off the workforce every three months - I certainly don't feel smug, and having seen what my grown-up kids have had to deal with getting established in the jobs market I think the lack of 'proper' jobs for the young is shameful.

I was made redundant nine years ago and I was out of work for 14 months, I was lucky as I have a trade (mechanic) until I could find formal work I was a bit of a mobile mechanic doing odd jobs in the area I lived, I also did a dog walking service and I was our local Avon 'lady'.

I could have found a permanent job much quicker but I'm not the sort of person who would just settle, so I would rather do my own thing until I found a job I would enjoy.
