You're not just unlucky, we live in a country where there is very high unemployement of many millions and very little opportunities unless you have connections. It's always been about who you know, not what you know.

Don't worry, four and a half years is nothing, been about 20 years here. Never give up:)

That doesn't describe the UK. Two million is not 'many millions'. There are not 9 million looking for work. Despite similar populations, France has 1.5mn or so more unemployed than the UK. Unemployment in Spain is around 4x the rate in the UK.

And it's not *always* about who you know and there are a lot of opportunities without connections.

Eight weeks for me, though they felt very much longer.

The job I found, and the backup job offer, both came from contacts I'd made in the industry. It was soul destroying applying for jobs advertised in the normal way.

Mass immigration has driven many low-middle jobs cheaper - many to around minimum wage. Great for unemployment figures, but poor for tax receipts as the government is now seeing. Worse, those tax receipts have to go further - more schools, housing, hospitals.

6 weeks. Laid off on the day my daughter was born ( nice timing !) and then had to sign on for the first time ever. Felt utterly useless.

Went to sign on for the 2nd time and had to explain to a stroppy teenager what I'd been doing to find work. The spotty little !!!!!! was looking at the screen whilst talking 'at' me...so I gave him some strongly worded advice on how to treat people eg Can you at least look at me whilst you're talking to me like I'm a piece of trash? I've got more qualifications than you've had years on this planet and I have to hope that YOU find ME a job ???

Thankfully found a job and didn't have to go through it again!!!

The wording used should have been looking for work due to being either out of work or underemployed.

Whilst there might be around 2 million officially unemployed there are many millions more who are not entitled to benefits (possibly due to having a working partner) who are also looking very hard for work who aren't part of the official figures.

I have been "officially" unemployed looking for full time work for 12 months before giving up and now no longer attempt to look for full time work. I am now self employed working just enough doing something that I enjoy, earning just enough to get by.

I left my previous job at the end of June last year and have only just started a new job. However, I didn't start looking until January and only applied for a handful of jobs, most of which I got interviews for. I took a couple of months break when I was unsuccessful at all the interviews and did some more voluntary work to broaden my experience.

I then applied for 3 more jobs and got interviews for 2 and was offered the last one. I had 7 interviews altogether. New job is on an 18 month contract, which may or may not be extended so I could be back on the job market within the next year or two.

6 months. Graduated from uni just when the recession hit and the contract on the retail job I had while studying came to an end. Being told to remove my degree from my CV was not what I expected when I went to sign on.

  • Not a single day as I've been lucky enough to get a job in a very secure company upon graduation.

I do count myself very fortunate to have been so lucky.

Walked out of a 6 and 1/2 year stint at a famous hotel chain in mid 2010 and been out ever since with 2 and half years voluntary inbetween and 6 months NVQ at college.

I deserve a medal for surviving without sanction for 4 1/2 years :(

You are extremely gullible and foolish if you believe the fudged unemployment stats of 2 million. There are many millions more who are unemployed, around 9 million working age adults out of work.

Then there another 8 million working part time, a great deal them wanting full time work.

And then there's the 2 million or so self employed, a lot proportion of them not doing any real work at all but are down as "self employed" to increase their benefits through working tax credits.

This is without mentioning all the zeo hour contracts.

We have a huge shortage of jobs for people in this country.
