I did decide to change careers and went to uni for 3 years, but had a zero hour part time job after a year.
When I graduated there were 2.5months where I didn't have a fulltime job (about 6 weeks before I got an offer) but kept the zero hour job and worked at least 30 hours a week in that 2.5months - so never really, I've always had something else lined up
  • When I first moved to the UK it took a couple of weeks to find my first job (temping) - that first couple of weeks and a few days between temp assignments are the only times I've been unemployed since I started working at 17.
Common sense?...There's nothing common about sense!

Four and a half years and still unemployed. The nightmare continues for me.
Have done some voluntary work during this time but it's all led to nothing. Was signed off looking for work and on ESA for two of those years.
I guess I'm just an unlucky person.

I used to think that when I was unemployed, but I am sure that something will come along, it did for me, so sure it will for you too
Its all about PMA, be positive and you shall succeed

You're not just unlucky, we live in a country where there is very high unemployement of many millions and very little opportunities unless you have connections. It's always been about who you know, not what you know.

Don't worry, four and a half years is nothing, been about 20 years here. Never give up:)

Thanks for the positive replies, though I've had problems with depression even before my last job ended, coming to a head where I was looking at suicide sites instead of jobsearching sites and having a brush with the law because of it.
  • I too suffer from depression & I have at times in the past contemplated suicide once or twice, but whatever life throws at me I get back up and keep fighting , because I am titanium, thats the attitude that I have and that has got me through a hell of a lot of crap in my life

I acknowledge that we don't have full details, but 20 years of not working looks more like a life style choice and a lack of job opportunities.

You're right about a lack of job opportunities, 9 million unemployed and only half a million vacancies in this country, no wonder there are so few job opportunities for people :(

I lasted 3 weeks from coming home from travelling a few weeks and signing up to an agency I got work through. I had odd spells when at university but I have been pretty lucky overall
