Nectar is Changing means Sainsbury saving THEIR costs

Only just realised today that they were removing the points on bag re-use at the same time. It was fairly obvious they'd go with the bag tax, as that'll allow retailers to cut bag use without having to foot the bill in the form of points, and it's something that Tesco have already done in countries with the charge already introduced. The charge however doesn't come in until October time? It just stinks of laziness; that they can't be arsed with the admin twice, and will just enjoy the extra 5 months of lining their own pockets on that front. I bet Tesco don't remove theirs until the day of the charge.
The bit that really sticks in the throat is the part of this article http://www.edie.net/news/5/Sainsburys-to-stop-Nectar-points-for-bag-reuse/ where they claim that customers tend to reuse bags without the point reward. Yes, BECAUSE THE MAJORITY OF YOUR STAFF IGNORE THAT CUSTOMERS ARE USING THEIR OWN BAGS AND DON'T BOTHER TO ADD THE POINTS!! Not to mention the self-service machines throwing the occasional hissy fit and not allowing them to be added either.
Tesco cut their points previously yes, but at least they were giving out 2p per point prior to this. Sainsbury's never did that and probably benefitted from unwitting customers spending, thinking that they were getting 1 point = 1 pence as is standard. Sainsbury's is the stingiest reward program ever. It wasn't long ago they were removing points on spirits and dressing it up as a legal requirement when it wasn't. Brand Match? Might as well call it Asda Match. Just an excuse to give out less coupons. Funny how they shout about comparisons to Tesco, Waitrose and Morrisons on signs in the aisles.0 -
My last 3 shops with Tesco I didn't get points for bag reuse and first time I queued up to get them added as a matter of principle, but after that I just couldn't be bothered to waste my precious time so (rather childishly I admit) just grabbed a handful of their free bags to use later, to make up for it, so Sains are not alone in that area0

Tesco have the best point system, I have 20p off a litre at the moment (petrol obviously, not getting diesel from there!) plus you can use clubcard points in the exchange and get 4x the amount! £10 off clubcard gives you a £40 voucher for a restaurant.
I only started using Sainsburys when we bought a kitchen from Homebase and received lots of points - I've spent them all now so only occasionally go there if it's handy at the time.Trev. Having an out-of-money experience!
C'MON! Let's get this debt sorted!!0 -
So that's a £500 spend before we get £2.50? I hardly use Tescos so no idea if that is the same.
We also have 4 nectar cards that we use in rotation, and as we live a stone throw away I never EVER get coupons like my mother does, she gets regular £2 off £20 shops, and once got £8 off a £40 shop!! It's rare I even get offered double points on a shop. In December I don't think I was given a single coupon, apart from some scheme where if I spent £90 in one shop every week for 4/5 weeks I would get some points.
I did sign up to this yesterday though, which gives me 5 coupons each time to use in store, I was wondering if they would offer more coupons, so this may be a digital trial? Soften the blow of them halving and removing bag points.

I heard they are going to do more double point weekends and triple points when buying certain categories like one week, it could be shampoo, cooking sauces and coffee. Then the following week - cereal, frozen fish and laundry products. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0

Yeah, £500 spend for £2.50, excepting any bonus points if they actually materialise. Sainsburys over the last year or so have stopped giving out so many offers anyway, I think.
Tesco operates at the equivalent to Sainsbury's current rate (1 point per pound, but each point is worth 1p, rather than the soon to expire 2 points worth 0.5p each per pound.) I bet the one point thing makes the less savvy shoppers think that Sainsbury's are actually reducing to equal Tesco when actually come April, they will only be giving out half as much.
Only thing with Tesco is you have to wait for the vouchers to redeem the points rather than spending when you like once you reach the minimum threshold, but that is lower at £1.50 in Tesco.0 -
Another way that Sainsbury's are tight fisted:
Tesco award points for every £1 spent, even parts of the purchase paid by vouchers aka points. No points on redeemed points in Sainsbury's. And I've always thought as it was 2 points per pound, it should have been 1 point per 50p, but obviously that would have meant giving out more points. Can't have that now, can we?0 -
"At times like Christmas, we'll also be holding bigger and better Double Up events to give you great value when we know it matters most to you. "
So 50% less points per shop but they will occasionally give you double value (ie. what the points are currently worth).
The only thing they have missed off their marketing is the "new and improved" scheme to hoodwink shoppers.
How amateurish are the people putting out their comms? This is even less convincing than their rationale for no points on spirits and only Asda in BrandMatch. Seriously, in this case, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to say they were cutting them so they could give better deals on products in store - the thing that attracts people to Asda in the first place seeing as they have no loyalty card. And Asda Price Guarantee beats prices by 10% and actually compares their own brand with those of the other stores. Sainsbury's just give it some bull about how they can't do that!
Rationale for AsdaMatch and spirits non-points would have taken more thinking, but isn't that what they get paid for?!
Too big for their boots. They seem to think they have Waitrose food and New Look clothes or something, the prices they charge. When the local Esso is cheaper on fuel than Sainsbury's, it really shows how greedy they are.
Pretty much the only time I'll now shop in Sainsbury's is during 25% off clothing and if there's a Sainsbury's own brand (currently micro rice, micro mac cheese, pasta pots and some otherwise unheard of brand of noodles that I prefer to those that I can get elsewhere.)0 -
How amateurish are the people putting out their comms?
Not amateurish at all, they know exactly what they are doing.
They don't know what any individual will do or think, but they know what the majority will do and think.
In months and years to come they know it won't matter that some people will still "I am only get half the points I used to get". Because the majority will think "I'm getting twice as many points today as I thought I would, that's a good thing"
Even the ones that do remember won't refuse to hand over their card at the checkout just because the number of points have been halved.0 -
We shop in Sainsburys. Mainly as our local ASDA is horrifically busy, Morrisons is just a terrible experience around here and the amount of junk we have bought from Tesco food quality wise wouldn't ever see me return (though I love how they support Diabetes UK).
This is bad news though. It puts me off a little and I will be stopping in our local ALDI on the way home from work a little more than usual once these changes happen. Nectar isn't brilliant (but is any of them) but it kept us loyal as we were getting something back, still getting a enjoyable shop, cheapest and best quality fuel in the area and only paying a few quid more than other shops for the experience.
That few quid more could now turn into £10 which is a lot of shopping in ALDI.
Our local Sainsburys is a ghost town at 8PM.
Our local ASDA is like a One Direction concert at 8PM.
Do Sainsburys really think something like this is going to help them? Facepalm or what!0
