I'm starting to wonder if Sainsbury's doesn't have a collective deathwish. I used to use its stores for about 80 per cent of my shopping but gradually defected as its prices rose. seemingly week by week.

Nowadays, I put up with the down at heel environment at a Morrisons for branded products at usefully lower prices, Waitrose for luxury products and the chaos of Aldi for really serious savings on staples.

Just what is it that Sainsbury's thinks it has to offer that is so compelling that it can chip away at one of its few remaining selling points?

Oh poor you, you're a martyr to the mse cause. Martin would be proud of you.:money:But look on the bright side, it could be worse and you might have to go to Asda with the chavs slapping their children.;)

Really not impressed about this! It takes forever to collect enough Nectar points for anything as it is! As A.Badger said, their prices seem to rise week by week, and I don't enjoy shopping there so much any more - almost every time I go in I notice prices have risen!
Also remember we are being told that inflation is falling due to declining food prices and that there is a supermarket pricing war going on. Heaven help us if inflation starts to go up and the supermarkets decide to tighten up their margins:eek:

I've not had the email yet (unless it went straight to spam/junk). I can't help wondering if they are considering cutting it as a way to survive-just doing so bit by bit, over the years it has just gotten more and more of a pretty miserly card. Though if Tesco who undercut them on price are struggling, then they really must be! Maybe they are just not being so spoken about in the press because they are a lesser giant to fall.

It would be an interesting blueprint for Tesco to watch though, people had worried they'd pull their clubcard or greatly reduce the offers to compensate their profit loss the other week but what Sainsburys are doing here is pretty close to cutting it and once people start to feel less of a reason to pay more the profits for Sainsburys will start to decline (my prediction) and they'll end up worse for it. It was never an amazing loyalty card to have but making it even less worthwhile will just make it even harder for them to lure in customers.

It does all seem a bit like they don't know if their coming or going, I caught an advert about their new prices when I visited my mum the other day, neither of us understood what it meant by their new price match and that they were using Tesco to price match against in the advert just added even more to the confusion after having an email not long ago explaining that Sainsburys were no longer going to be price matching Tesco.

They accidentally posted an advert aimed at staff trying to get customers to spend 50p more in the run up to Christmas and though I don't for a second think this is a new thing (I've got a few too many years experience in retail to know how this works ;)) it was a mistake to put the ad where customers could see, I can't help wondering if they are really not holing their own at all.

Time will tell I suppose but they better up their game pretty quickly or they really wont manage much longer. It just seems the only press Sainsburys are offering to their customers are less and less of a reason to visit.
  • I figured things must be bad for them when I got an email saying that their prices would now only be compared to asda. Then the nectar email arrived. We have a few cards we use on rotation within the family, but find we shop there less and less with their rising prices and the few organic products we could get there no longer stocked like sainsburys organic long grain rice for one. I wonder if they will survive. I also noticed their online home and garden shopping is no longer available.

Indeed, and Nectar is pretty naff anyway.

Anybody else remember (British Airways) Air Miles at Sainsburys? Back then, we used Sainsburys for virtually all of our supermarket shopping. Since they lost Air Miles to Tesco, we shop elsewhere.

'Loyalty' is one-sided anyway. We have six months left to collect Nectar points at current rates, plenty of time to look for alternatives. We just need a closer Aldi or Lidl. ;)

Yes I remember those days well! At the time we did all our shopping at Sainsbury's and the points quickly mounted up, giving us quite a few cheap holidays courtesy of Airmiles. When this stopped we started shopping elsewhere! Nowadays most of our shopping is done at Aldi, with tinned grocery products from such as Home Bargains, B & M, Poundstretcher etc.

On my odd visits into Sainsbury's these days I can't believe how quiet it is. Reducing Nectar points by half will be another nail in its coffin!

Will Tesco, Asda, Morrisons etc. do promotions, advertising etc. in April to try to capitalise on Sainsbury's Nectar point reducing scheme?

Just got my letter by post to explain this.
I just wonder why they are giving so much notice, usually this sort of thing gets hidden away or sneaked in. Maybe they think by announcing now customer's will forget by then? Or even shop more now 'to make the most of points before they get reduced' then get 'hooked' on staying with them?

I think it's a shame they are changing as i like collecting points and have benefited from a lot of discounted restaurant trips because of it, it won't affect my loyalty though as I'm loyal to whoever offers the best price.
Actually it won't affect me at all as I'm emigrating to New York next year February. lol

I was going to switch to sainsburys mobile in January (along with oh) to benefit from the triple nectar points (£3 per £100) but not really worth it now at £1.50. I think I'll stick with sainsburys until April and then switch to Aldi where the parents shop, they keep telling me how unbelievably cheap it is and saw they do £5 off voucher in papers. Local sainsburys have frozen staff hiring too so the place is like a zoo lately.

It's when they start slapping each other that I worry.
