Love to change to sky, but don't know whether to risk their dodgy reviews.0
-
Well I may not go with Sky + for now as its only £30 for the installation, plus the £120.00 for my dish installation.
I have my own router so I have no issues with Sky Broadband.0 -
You are contractually required to use the Sky supplied router for their broadband service.
It is possible to use another router but you need the Sky one (which has customised firmware) to extract the username and password.
You can get information on this at https://www.skyuser.co.uk.
I've still no idea why you think you have to pay £120 for a dish, unless its an unusual installation. Installation is currently £30, plus £99 if you want Sky+That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
That is ridiculous, contractually obliged? What is this a dictatorship?
Well I spoke with someone from the Sky sales and they say that it costs £120.00 for a dish and for the installation, this is from the horses mouth. If I ring up and its something different I am going to be so annoyed, can anyone do their job right anymore???
Seriously though I get this from all the utilities, they don't know their !!!! from their elbow!!!!
Actually, My router is a wireless router - and that is what I need because my office is upstairs, I'm sure I don't need to use there equipment to extract a username and password, surely that would be documented in an email or letter.0 -
Nope. As Penrhyn pointed out you have to use their router to connect as your user name and password are encrypted into the router so you can that unless you can extract the info.0
-
Yeah, but it seems daft that I need to get the username/password out of a machine. I am a web developer and I know quite a bit about broadband, and I have never had to get login details out of a machine. Are you saying that it is pre-installed with my information on?0
-
To be honest, its a very good router they provide. DG834GT I believe.
It is preinstalled and can't be changed though by using telnet it can easily be retrieved and used on a different router.
So what if you're a web devel lol! the router is absolutely fine! Very secure, and you can even do your own port forwarding.. wow.
As for a dictatorship comment, I'm a bit confused how you can relate a situation liek Nazi Germany and the killing of a lot of Jews, with a situation where Sky want you to use their own router.
Maybe if you used common sense you'd be able to see that they only SUPPORT the netgear router thus being the main reason why they contract you to use that one.... They will be under a deal with netgear to provide and ensure their users use a netgear router.
Orange has livebox, wannadoo had their own etc...
You need to calm down as by the sounds of things, you hate them based on other peoples reviews before you've experienced them yourself.
As I said in an earlier comment you can get free installation etc by going through a salesperson or whatever... Or just wait for the next promotion...
As for dodgy reviews.. also realise that people will make effort writing up bad things about them, but people won't do that when it works!!!! Think about it, Sky has a massive % share in the market.. and ok you see a lot of bad reviews online but what about hte millions that have it and are happy with it?
If they were THAT bad, they'd get into a lot more trouble from OFT etc....[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."

The Sky Router is a Netgear DG834GT, you can look the model up.
It has a username and password in its firmware to allow it to access Skys BB network.
I think they did it for simplicity, when you get it all you do is plug it up open your browser and your connected.
You will be sent another username and password to access the Skybb portal for email.
If you wish to research it further I suggest you go to https://www.skyuser.co.ukThat gum you like is coming back in style.0 -

I think you need to wind your own neck in, I am not het up and I certainly don't need to calm down.
I just think that its a little closed to force people to use their router, I have my own router which I prefer as it works perfectly well with my current Broadband and it cost me enough money for me to not just discard it.
I have not even read anyone else's reviews because I know Sky are a good company as I have dealt with them for ten years prior to this move.
I can't believe the way you have spoken to me, like you know me. I said nothing about Nazi Germany and it was a loose reference to dictatorship by forcing people to use their router.
I just prefer to have the choice.0 -
All it means is that they won't support you if you use another router.
If ALL customers have the same router with the same firmware version, then support is a lot easier. If us teccie's do something, and the connection stops working, then they wont support us. Simple as that really.
They're not going to do routine checks to ensure your using netgear, but if something goes wrong you're on your own.
Having said that, their router is once again a VERY good reliable model so you wouldn't need another....
You sounded heated when accusing sky of being a dictatorship and insulting every utility company in England... to be honest....[FONT=Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]"The internet is a great way to get on the net."
