Summer tyres for winter?

I would tend to disagree with that statement
www.google.co.uk/britain+grinds+to+a+halt+due+to+snow
just a quick look at that says you are wrong
you see pictures of cars stuck on the motorway with an inch of snow on the ground and drivers complaining about being stuck for 24 hrs when a car fitted with four season or better still full winter tyres would easily cope with these conditions and you would still be moving0 -
I have never put winter tyres on my car, these days I do not drive in the snow except in an emergency (I always carry an emergency kit in the car which contains a blanket, a torch, spare fuses and in the winter some soup and a couple of Mars bars).
If I lived in a country like Sweden where having winter tyres is compulsory then I would get them but I do not think they are necessary for driving in the UK.
if you happened to be out and about and the snow started to fall and you became stuck who would you blame?0 -

Jesus, what results did you think were going to come up when you type the exact phrase you're looking for into google?!? Use some common sense for God's sake man.
Bring me some facts (actual figures, not newspaper selling hyperbole) from any of those articles that say anything remotely close to the whole of Britain ever ground to a halt. We have that kind of snow, very, very, rarely in this country, and even when we do the huge majority of the place isnt affected.0 -

but you said it never happens and i said it does nearly every year, if you live in a bubble with its own little tropical sub climate and you never experience bad weather then well done you, did you not experience the big freeze in 2009-2010
I work outside and spend large periods driving around a rural area and we tend to get around far better than the people that live in urban areas and think it never ever snows in this country
and as to the first point if your statement was correct i would expect google to come up with no results found0 -
Yep I got to many villages, is a nightmare in the snow.
The amount of 4x4's you see thinking they're the dogs nuts, but with their wide low profile summer tyres any fwd car with winter tyres would do better.
Had a brand new Land Rover trying to tow me out of a bad patch, trying all these different modes and diff locks, but with summer tyres he was wasting his time.0 -

That's odd, Land Rovers usually come standard with Pirelli Scorpion Zero all-season tyres.0 -

I dunno, looked sporty, but trying to tow a lorry out of snow, guess proper knobbly tyres are needed, not buttons to push.
Still very wide tyres though, so sit on the snow rather than dig in?0 -
I put a set of Goodyear Ultragrip 8 on my Mondeo this time last year. We didn't have much snow and ice, so I can't comment on that, but grip in the wet was excellent. I meant to take them off and put summer tyres on this Spring, but never got round to it. The Goodyears are no noisier than the Primacy I took off, wear seems to be about average, and there is no noticeable difference in handling. They did about 2k miles to Switzerland and back, fully loaded at motorway speeds with no drama. I'm pleased with them, and I'll probably run them through winter now, and think about some summer tyres next year.
I'm lucky in that my local fitter has offered to swap them over for nothing, and store the unused tyres, provided I buy the new set from him. As his prices are pretty keen, this is a no-brainer. Not sure if there would be extra charges for balancing etc, but not a big deal for the convenience.
This is what just about every tyre dealer in Austria, Switzerland and other Alpine areas do - but sometimes for a token charge.
The tyre companies often run promotions advertising the fact that if you buy their brand the storage is free / included in the price for the life of the tyre.0 -

around here we don't tend to have many chelsea tractors fitted with summer tyres
most of the 4x4,s around here use all terrain tyres which whilst not a full winter tyre they are a lot better than a tyre that is near to a racing slick
you can prepare yourself as best you can for every weather eventuality, but you will still get stuck behind the wally that thinks it never snows in this country0
