My Little Dumpling's got Horrific Nappy Rash
Comments
-
I've been having exactly the same problem with my DD, I'm quite sure it's teeth related.
I know you said you doubted it was an infection, as you knew the cause was teeth, but that isn't to say that a secondary infection hasn't developed. If it isn't looking any better by now, take them to see the gp asap.
My gp prescribed canesten hc, which worked wonders - she said it was very likely to be some sort of fungal infection. I also find metanium the only other thing that works. My poor LO had enormous open sores that were weeping so much the cream was getting washed away quicker than it could work. Horrible. They develop so quickly as well.
Oh and Huggies nappies seem to make matters worse. Hate them! Tesco's nappies are a million times better and much cheaper.

I agree with MadMonkey. My LOs are aged 2 and 1 and the only times they get nappy rash are when they are teething. This is despite me putting them in cheepo nappies (Sainsburies/Tesco's own) and using baby wipes on a regular basis - I use nivea cleaning wipes on my face and the list of ingredients is surprisingly similar.
When their little bots do flare up I use either vaseline or sudacrem - works for us.0 -
hi
i again like other's use sudocrem,at first sign of redness i put it on and then again throughout the day anyway then at night time before bed after a bath and nappy which i also put sudocreme on!so im all for sudocreme !!appreciate what you have got x0 -
Apologies in advance if this has already been mentioned (I've not got time to read the whole thread).
When my daughter got nappy rash (many years ago, but it should work just the same now) I used to whip up an egg white (white only, no yolk) and spread it over the rash. It worked as a barrier but wasn't sticky or heavy and it worked beautifully.I let my mind wander and it never came back!0 -
my daughter had terrible nappy rash and the pain their in, your heart goes out, hers was due to an antibiotics reaction .
the only thing I found was to dry the sores first using a dusting of baby powder on to cotton wool ( dusting only as not to clog) then pat over skin.
I then added metanium cream over the top .
my theory was that when adding more cream your still keeping the sores wet and moist and they need to dry to heal and not be as painful.
you can now get canestan talc now over the counter not sure if you can use it on babies worth checking out.or do they still sell sterzac powder?
I didnt remove the cream during nappy changes just patted dry again with dusting of talc and re applied metanium cream . she had a bath every night to remove the cream and then we started all over again .
worth a try
good luck hope it heals soon

Incidentally, my HV said not to use barrier creams like Sudocream with disposable nappies, because they...you know...form a barrier...which means that the lovely wickable lining inside the nappy is coated with cream and no longer wicks away the wee, hence the baby's sitting in it. Interesting that so many people swear by it, though - perhaps they're reusable nappy users..?

Yes, that's why I never used vaseline with disposables - they are designed to draw urine into the crystals which is why these nappies rarely feel wet to the touch and some swear they delay toilet training by not letting the child know they are wet.
However, I used disposables mostly also swear by sudocrem. I never put it on thick enough to block the nappy though - it's meant to be used sparingly! I only ever use the tiniest amount so that you couldn't actually tell they had it on their bums. Always worked perfectly and never seemed to bother them at all but perhaps that is due to using such small amounts?
Kittie - the only time my three had nappy rash was when they were teething, and this included when my youngest was in real nappies! I only used disposables with the older two but my little had cloth nappies for about 6 months. It has nothing to do with the type of nappy or wipes, I can assure you!!! Having said that, as I've already meantioned, Huggies did not agree with any of my children - I don't know why but I do think the nappies have a stronger 'smell' than other brands - has anyone else noticed that?
Have to say in response to the troll accusation, while I agree it is a distressing time and I can empathise completely (which is why I bothered to carry on reading), I was a little taken aback at how the OP replied to people!
Hope he is better today.0 -
Ah but did the OP ask all and sundry WHY her child had nappy rash? No, she asked what she could do to SOOTHE it. It really wasn't called for to post asking "are you using cheap nappies? 'Cos that'll cause it" on top of numerous post suggesting things I'd specifically said weren't options. It just makes me wonder why I bother putting any detail in my posts sometimes. And if the man at the PC helpdesk asked me if I had tried simply rebooting before going to the trouble of calling, yes I would be "aggressive" to him too.
Thanks for all the concern and to those who PMed too; DS is almost cured today. I put him in the bath for an hour last night then plastered the sore spots in metanium and covered it with a slab of vaseline. He woke up this morning with just a few pale pink splodges and by bedtime tonight he was almost healed. I've done the same again tonight and hope it will have cleared by tomorrow. The CM said he was happy all day and he certainly came home all bright and chirpy.0 -
You will know that nappy rash is caused when pee meets poo and then it irritates the skin.
Both mine got really bad nappy rash when teething, its how I knew a tooth was on its way. And calpol gives them the runs, which makes the rash even worse!
What I did at the first sign of a mild case was ditch baby wipes and either change his bum in the bath so I could give him a wash with the shower, or use a flannel with plain tepid water. Then used zinc cream for a day or so.
If it was a bad case, and eldest used to have same reaction to orange juice, was have the nappy off when ever I could, and used egg white. I have never heard of the salmonella thing, I keep my eggs in the fridge so the risk is lower anyway. Anyway, whip up the egg white with a fork to break it up a bit, straight out the fridge will be lovely and cooling on sore skin. Slather it on and leave it to dry a bit.
It usually clears up pretty quick if you get rid of all irritants - disposable nappies, wipes etc. I did at times use a flannel in a nappy and just checked him every hour. Its hard work, and people have a habit of blaming YOU for your child getting nappy rash, would we actually let our babies get it if we could help it?
My eldest is pretty bad right now too, hes 2 and a half and at that age where he should be starting to potty train, but die to his condition, he has no sensation yet.
Even if you want to use the cream you have, try putting it in the fridge, if nothing else it will be soothing when it goes on. Try to have him go without a nappy for a wee while, and only clean him with plain water. keep an eye on it for infection (you can see when it starts to go bad) Best you can do.
Hope he gets better soon, and I know what you mean with the vinegar smell, some nights if hes been drooling his bed STINKS!!! Took me years to work out what it was.0 -
Oh sorry, see its getting better!
Is this metanium the one in a tube in a plain white box? I remember using one that I got as a freebie and it was great, been looking for it ever since. Think it was gold or something that was in it??
I go google.
ETA... It is that one! Will take a note of that and go to boots tomorrow. cheers!0 -
Actually,
I have read this forum for some time and just happened to see this thread.
My name is Andrew and I have a four and a half year old son. I have experienced all of the usual parenting problems with my partner / son, and also posted on message boards to get advice. I was struck by the poster's aggressive response to people offering her advice, and was surprised by it.
I'm certainly not a TROLL as you so articulately posited.
Cheers
Andrew
Nice to meet you Andrew, I felt your post wasnt in helping Elle and there was no need to 'fan the flames' persay.
I've seen Elle and other members getting a real berrating from other members (and from well known trolls) I'm sorry I assumed you where the one I thought your where with a new AE.
Hope all's cleared up tomorrow Elle
