My Little Dumpling's got Horrific Nappy Rash

I don't know what else to do, I've not seen anything like this before! DS had mild nappy rash for a spell when he was teething several months ago but it was just a few pink splodges. He also used to get a contact allergy for a few weeks from the ex giving him undiluted fresh OJ but that was clearly a contact allergy - big red welts.
What DS has got now is a totally pink bum with loads of little pink spots all over it and parts of it are darker pink than others; this says to me bad but regular nappy rash. He's been dribbling all week and has a faint stagnant vinegar smell about him which is indicative of the last back teeth preparing to break through.
I gave him calpol this morning and put metanium on as that's what the GP prescribed previously when he had the teething rash and says it's the best one (doesn't sting like sudocream does). No joy from that at all which I found unusual for DS so this afternoon he was running around outside bumless for an hour. As he's tired, I've just had to give him a quick hose down (er, not quite potty trained!) and put him to bed with metanium and a bum on.
Don't know what else to do? Poor sod is clearly in a lot of pain because he's screaming the flat down at bum change time and this is completely out of character for him.
*Sniff*
I've got pants and absorbant liners (okay, Tesco value flannels) that I was going to use for potty training, would these be more breathable than a nappy for after he gets up from his nap? I can't leave DS bumless 'cos it's gotten very cold outside and I just can't have him peeing on everything indoors. He's only got bladder control to stop a wee when it's started - he doesn't yet know when it's coming and I put off actual potty training because of my return to work.

give lasinoh a try, the stuff you use on your nip nips if your breast feeding. It helps heal my little girls bottom no end, although ive never tried metanium.
is it possible for some nappy off time perhaps sitting on a towel while playing a game or watching tv to try and get lots of air at it?0 -
if its really bad maybe you should get it checked by dr or health visitor. may have become an actual skin infection rather than just nappy rash.
I always used zinc and caster oil on my kids. less additives and colourings etc than some of the products you can buy.x x x0 -
I feel very sorry for you both.
I always used vaseline, nothing nasty in it to sting, and like it has been said before, fresh air is the best thing.
Hope he feels better soon.0 -
Dont know about sudocream stinging but it used to work wonders on my sons bots. Really lavished it on thick before putting a nappy on, did not take the time to rub it in.:j0

try canestan cream the 1% stength from the chemist, it's usually what the Dr prescribes. you can't use the canestan hc over the counter for under 10's, but the plain one should help. use it 3 times a day and the sudocreme or metanium between applications.0

Try giving him rosehip syrup - it soothes fractiousness and is brill at all sorts of inflammation. It has sugar in it, so be careful with his teeth.
Avoid all acidic food, or make them extremely dilute.
CHeck with GP - as suggested, might be something other than nappy rash.0 -
my goodness I feel like I have said something I shouldnt. didnt mean to offend by saying to get it checked if its really bad. even teething babies can get infections. I speak from experience. sorry I tried to help.x x x0

hi,
i think everything you are doing is fine and should work, it just takes time unfortunatly. my children have had the most awful nappy rash at times not due to my failure as a mother either btw!
metanium works well and although a bit costly works and calpol for the discomfort, and just changing a bit more than usual i'm afraid.
