    Fuschia, Andrew's partner posting.

It sounds like it could be thrush - in which canesten should help, also giving the child bio yoghurt to eat. It would do not harm to get it checked by the doctor in case there's an infection.

I see no need to jump on someone who's just running through the basics (nappies are changed enough etc etc)

It's like when you call a computer helpdesk they always tell you to reboot. They're not saying you're stupid and haven't tried that already, they're just running through a list beginning with the basics, just in case.

    Hope it gets better soon.

I remembered in the middle of the night - the bright pink cream I was advised to use was called drapolean - I got mine from Boots and 3 yrs ago was about £5.

HTH and hes feeling better today.

I definetely agree with using Timodine, DS gets horrendous teething nappy rash, all the skin splits and bleeds. Timodine works brilliantly, more or less over night.

I agree Timodine works very quickly. Just a pain it needs to be kept in the fridge.

I am on baby no 3 and still trying out new tips on nappy rash as each one of mine has been very different and responded differently to treatments.

Ds2 gets very very bad nappy rash when he is teething - it actually bleeds at times.

I tried egg white, metanium, silk nappy liners, no napp for hours e.t.c

None of it worked at all - then a mum at school suggested vaseline and OMG how good is it ?

You need to put JUST vaseline on - no sudocrem or metanium. When you change the bum slather vaseline all over really thickly. The rash should clear within 24 hours. Basically the vaseline prevents the wee touching the rash at all so it stops it irritating the already sore skin and it heals.

I was not convinced initially but was seriously amazed at the results.

Strangely Metanium worked wonders for my dd and I swore by it but it does absolutley nothing with ds2.

Also make sure the wipes are fragrance free - we alway used normal wipes then dd started crying when we wiped her face (as babies do) but when she could talk she would say "ow" - so i used on on my face and they are a bit stingy.

  • Hi ya

Whenever any of mine got nappy rash I made sure I didnt use wipes only cotton wool and water, and I used either bapanthian (sp) or a very low dose of hydroquarterzone cream (sp) the latter was if it was real bad but I could count on one hand how many times I used that.

Kamillosan (Boots has tubes of this) gets my vote - very effective, and pleasant camomile smell.

Incidentally, my HV said not to use barrier creams like Sudocream with disposable nappies, because they...you know...form a barrier...which means that the lovely wickable lining inside the nappy is coated with cream and no longer wicks away the wee, hence the baby's sitting in it. Interesting that so many people swear by it, though - perhaps they're reusable nappy users..?

Are you hinting that people who use cloth nappies let their babies sit in the urine so therefore swear by sudocreme to stop nappy rash?

If you are then you are wrong. I use cloth and my dds bum is pretty dry using fleece liners. The only time she gets nappy rash is if she is teething or wearing a disposable. A bamboo nappy and wool gets rid of nappy rash quicker then any cream I have used on her.

OP: Have you tried using a different brand of disposables and tried changing as soon as your little one is wet? Expensive but it would mean less contact with a wet nappy. Air is the best option though.

The only cream I have found to work on dd2 is Benpathalen (something like that!). Nothing else works on her.

I definatley think your dr should take a look at it though, if it hasnt cleared up for a while and is causing him pain, you have nothing to lose. IMO it sounds like it could be thrush. Yes teething causes bad rashes at times, but this rash may not be teething.

With DS1 - he got really bad nappy rash when he started teething.....I was nearly in tears myself when he was crying.....my mum bought emulsifying ointment from the chemist - you can get a huge tub of it......just use it like a soap over the wee one's bum when you bathe him, then apply liberally when you put a fresh nappy on.

With DS2, I used Vaseline every nappy change - and he never once got a rash. I prefer that to Sudocream....the OP is right, it can sting...it may be good for preventing the rash, but it's not nice to use once a rash appears.]

Elle83 - hope your wee one's bum is better soon (((Hugs)))

I don`t understand the trend to using baby wipes. Wipe your own face with one? No of course not, because it is full of chemicals. Then why use these chemicals on a delicate baby bottom. These chemicals are designed to clean sticky poo and they must weaken the protective properties of baby skin leaving skin open to rash and infection. Then add disposables on top and leave the poo a little too long and wham, another very sore bottom

I honestly don`t know why more new mums don`t wipe with a soft cloth and water and use terries with a fleece inner and a wrap or a woolie on top. Prevention is so much better than cure

Obviously you are lucky to not have a child who gets nappy rash when teething.

My LO gets chronic bleeding nappy rash with each tooth - even when I was using a bamboo nappy with a silk or fleece liner and wool wrap.

Blaming the nappy for the rash does not help - some babies would get nappy rash whatever the nappy and even if it was changed every 10 minutes.
