Sorry for the quote above- it was asking me to provide a link to a spam message posted by someone who had been an account holder for a while.
I did see some. but didn't post their names because my hypothesis is that they are genuine innocent users. Unfortunately the posts are now deleted and I can't find others.
Did MSE save these posts before deleting them? I think it is very important to discover the cause, and to let us all know. If users have the same password across different sites, and MSE has been hacked, they have a public duty to let everyone know.0 -

I think the spammer is taking a break and regrouping his troops.
Expect a second onslaught soon, probably in the early hours again.
I see new user accounts are still being created, by the minute, but not being used to post ... for now.
Back sooner than I thought.
MSE won't stop it until they stop the creation of new user accounts ... and delete all the aliases created today.
Edit: Looks like the MSE folk are on the case
... but only PPRing new accounts as they are used to post0 -

Did MSE save these posts before deleting them?
There are 3 types of hidden or deleted posts on this type of forum platform.
Posts may be approved or unapproved, either by moderators or automatically, and on some forums the automatic settings may be to pre-moderate some new users' posts, for example if they happen to contain links.
Or individual posts or whole threads can be deleted from the view of most users but still visible to moderators and admin.
Or they can be completely removed from the database.0 -

The biggest help you can give us is by clicking the spam button on any you see. We realise it's a big ask but if enough do it, it really does help us hugely.
Thank you
I'm exhausted doing it. This has been my mission for today.:rotfl:0
