Everyone, there is such an anti-smoking initiative nowadays if you go to your GP and say you need help to quit - I tried cold turkey twice and failed you can get the patches on prescription - just 3 prescriptions for 3 months supply - and that was four years ago - and never touched one since and I was on 40 a day!

One year, seven months, one week, one day, 23 hours, 7 minutes and 52 seconds. 23438 cigarettes not smoked, saving £5,671.72. Life saved: 11 weeks, 4 days, 9 hours, 10 minutes.

I tried about 6 times all together managing to stay smoke free for 18 mths 12 mths ,5 mths but always gave in to temptation.
I always smoked when I was out and had had a drink, then slowly got back in to it again.
This time if I have had a slip I just carry on as if I didn't and have managed to stay smoke free for nearly 2 years.
I don't drink much now and don't go out much so I can keep temptation to a minimum, I think I have had about 4 cigs this year.
My advice to anyone trying to stop is DONT STOP TRYING TO STOP you will do it in the end and anything that is a help to you just take it regardless of whether it is seen as cheating etc or not the end justifies the means.

    2 years 5 months 14 days 8.45 mins. Best thing I ever done. :)

The main reason I stopped was Big Brother watching the hoops they made the smokers jump through to get their fags. I thought thats a lot of power to give someone.
You can always get more with a kind word and a 2-by-4 than with just a kind word.

I've tried several times and failed miserably with patches, inhaler, gum......worth trying the docs for this? I'm overweight but no blood pressure or anything do you think they give it to fatties? Might try and find out a bit about it, we're getting a dog soon so it would be nice to have the lung capacity to keep up when we take him for a run!

    Hi there,

Just to let you all know that I started on a new drug at the end of July which is called Champix and unlike the other tablet (Zyban - I think) this is not based on Nicotine, it is a herbal remedy.
I have found it very good in that I don't want a cigarette any more (i did to begin with but it makes you feel sick if you smoke whilst on them, therefore it is pretty effective at making you go off them.
The only criteria for being prscribed them is that you must have tried one of the other options it gum etc before.

    Thanks
    Lyz

I'm on Champix, having tried patches & gum before. And I agree, it does take away the craving better than the others. My body doesn't seem to feel the need for nicotine anymore and also I don't get the irritability that I suffered when trying other methods.

(No problem with being prescribed them with HBP either - I take HBP & cholesterol tablets)
