Energy Price Cap announcement: Watch Martin Lewis explain what it means for your electricity and gas bills this winter

Have you given up smoking?

I enjoyed a cigarette, but knew I had to give up.

I decided to stop back in March, on the 14th in fact, I only remember as it was my sons Birthday the week before. In my usual Tesco delivery on the Tuesday night instead of ordering the cigs, I ordered patches, 6 boxes, 2 of each strength.

I saw this thread and wondered how much I've saved, :money:

£5.00 per box - 7 packs per week = £35
£35 per week - 17 weeks = £595

That's close to 2k a year  and all of the other benefits, health, smell, taste, the cost of all of those bits and pieces I used to buy when popping in for cigs, and don't forget the fuel when it was a special trip.

Ive spent this money on a knock through, new kitchen and decorating the rest of the house. :rotfl:No cigarette smells now.:p

Any one else worked out how much they have saved by giving up?
I'm just looking, I'm not buying.............
All Debts now paid :j

    Hey Blaze

Well done and congratulations! I stopped two weeks ago today and dont want to count how much I have saved till a whole month has gone by. So I will be back here in another fortnight to see how much I have for a new dress.

I never ever thought I would feel this good, its a brilliant feeling.

    Yes emmaroids I agree.

Not only do the patches cost money but they are defeating the object entirely as your body will still be addicted to nicotine. You are trying to get the nicotine out of your body to stop craving for it. If you are using patches you are still putting the need for nicotione in your body and therefore you will NEVER wean yourself off it.

Cold turkey has worked for me.

  • I gave up a little over 3 years ago. Used to spend approx £40 a week on the evil weed. Reckon I have not had to spend about £6,500 since giving up. Now that is serious money saving. All it cost me was the price of the Allen Carr book.

I havent as yet given up, I tried in the past but gave up trying, Im now at the stage where I dont want to give up, as I smoke 20 a day easily, I can see how much I would save by doing so, but I think its a case of giving up because I want to, not because I am pressured to. I just dont think I want to. Am I wrong in that???

Yes that workd for you but dont knock patches. some of us needed patches to get us through the initial early period.
Id never have stopped if I had gone cold turkey, I packed in 19 months...ish ago by using a patch for a day. Once id got through a day I knew I was well on my way. some people need patches for longer but personally wether its a day, a week, 6 weeks or 6 months with patches as long as they dont inhale that smoke and can stop smoking eventually then thats blooming brilliant.

dont knock patches, thats all I gotta say :D
