MINI are fixing my car for the grand sum of £50. They have replaced the starter motor but now it needs a lead or something. It's still dead. The parts are rare, presumably because that bit is not supposed to break yet when the whole model is only five years old, itself.

Oh, and thank you for all the wonderful and varied advice on the birthday card/present. I went shopping on Thursday with the intention, but ended up having a bra fitting and spending my money on new underwear for me. Infinitely more exciting. And then I went shopping on Friday and bought new collars and leads for the dogs. And then there was no time. Ho hum. I actually think that Nikkster's interpretation of making him angry would have been the result. He's the sort of person that blames other people for his own emotions.

I know you lot only have positive things to say about my car, but some others are not as charitable...

Looks fine to me, functional and roomy. For a bloke who used to waste thousands on buying new Mercs or BMW's, I now drive my beloved eight year old Peugeot 307, I bought at a BCA Auction seven years ago. At the time it cost me half the price when new. I only get it serviced every other year with just an oil and filter change, the year it's not serviced. The only things replaced on it have been tyres and brakes, although the Cam belt will need replacing on the next service. I've just done a return 600 mile journey to Devon and achieved 42 mpg. OK so it's not as much fun to drive as my last new car (top of the range SLK) but I'd have problems getting the Dog into that!:rotfl:

I find driving in the UK a total bore. The only time I drive anything 'fancy' is when I hire something abroad.

It's not its looks that are the problem. It's the fiat mechanical bits.

You'd never guess that I have had a problem with my fiat, would you?

    Me, bitter?

My upstairs smoke alarm has started beeping....it needs a new battery. Darn it. I've got a battery, but I don't want to go up a ladder, at the top of the stairs, to go through the battery replacement gymnastics.

I'll have to live with it as long as possible (again).

Our downstairs one beeps once every 2 or 3 days. Replaced the battery and it still beeps once every 2 or 3 days.

    Shrugs

If it's right at the top of the stairs, that's rather a dangerous place to have it. I sympathise, as I hate heights. I can climb a step ladder, but a step ladder at the top of the staircase would bother me a lot.

Is it easier to live with than the other one was, perhaps further away? I admired your stoicism previously.

Did you get somebody to change it for you previously with the downstairs one? Or did you manage it yourself in the end?

I'd just have to replace it. It would be like a dripping tap. Plus, I'd worry that the beeping is actually a sign that it's not working properly.

Ditto the beeps drive me crazy (although I am more laid back over whether it actually works)

Agree with Zag re Fits as well, the new model of the car is so bland no one notices it but it is also an unreliable piece of sh*t that no one knows how to repair properly.

However we are currently using our emergency car which means 3 kids close to each other in the back. Oh how we miss the peace and quiet of one in the front with us and two well separated in the back...
    I think....

I was puzzling over this until I saw the clue on Google that pre-school children can solve it very quickly. After that, it only took me a few seconds. It requires a complete change of mind-set.
