Well, that was a nippy night, accurate local weather site says it got down to -4 and it's -2 now.

Sort your heating. You know you can do it.

As long as you don't get talked into having a back operation.

Something to be avoided at (almost) any cost IMHO. They'd better do some fast talking if they want to operate on my back. If it goes wrong I'll never have sex again.

Apologies Gen, I tried to post yesterday but doesn't seem to have worked.

Wanted to say about Alexander Technique and Clinical Pilates for back trouble. They will only be a weapon in your armoury as opposed to a cure, but both are excellent for ensuring that your posture is good and that doesn't exacerbate things.

I have been doing clinical pilates (as opposed to the normal type) for about 9 months following a trapped nerve and advice from my doc that my back and hips would give me ongoing trouble if I didn't do something. It has improved my posture no end and I find that my mobility is much better as well as core strength improved.

My former boss had such a bad back that he could only sit down at work for a couple of hours a day without being in constant pain and found that the Alexander Technique worked for him.

I mention this purely because we were both told about this by our docs, so thought it worth discussing with yours.
Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

I am not a confident fiddler of strange taps. So many fears that I should have done X first, or X and Y before starting .... or that the knob will break off, or I'll turn it the wrong way.... and it'll snap off in my hand.

My learning style is that I like to be shown, then to do it myself while watched. Then I'd know for next time.

WE know you can do it.

I bet next door have the same boiler. It should take about 20 seconds to repressurise...if that. So if you don't manage to do it yourself today please knock on their door this evening and ask for help. It's really not a big favour.

The plumber neighbour's not been round, nor phoned - and all vehicles are gone from their house, so I can keep an eye out the rest of the day and hope he turns up or calls or something.

If and when you get the plumber round, ask him to teach you how to do it yourself. The first time it happened to me (ie in the first house I lived in that had a pressurised rather than gravity-fed system) I had no idea what was wrong. It was a rented house, though, so I could get a plumber out at the landlord's expense rather than my own. The plumber came, and not only fixed it in a matter of seconds, but explained what to do and showed me so that I would be able to do it myself next time. I then did it several times in that house, and then when I moved to my current house I was easily able to do it here too. It's normal to need to do it periodically in houses with pressurised systems (ie the newer kind).

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

either way, the tap being in line with the pipe means it is open and being perpendicular to the pipe means its shut.

Open one and then close it as a test.

Probably more like this? Just turn it so the blue bit lines up with the pipe. On some installations, there are two taps, and both need to be turned to have any effect.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Today I AM going to mark my AS level coursework. I could have done it a couple of weeks ago, but put it off to half term. I had planned to do it yesterday, but didn't. :o Today's trip to see friends has been cancelled because DS has a nasty cold and isn't well enough for a long journey, energetic time with friends and long journey back. :( So I can do yesterday's coursework marking today. I hate it with a passion. I would rather do any other part of the job but this one, even writing reports. Perhaps if I do a bit at a time and keep dropping in on here....?

We have 13 students in the set, but I share the set with another teacher and we are sharing the coursework marking, so I only have to do 6. So that's 40 marking criteria for 6 students makes a total of 240 marking criteria to decide about and write comments on.

Talking of making oneself do work that one really doesn't want to have to face... Nikkster, how is the thesis coming along?

@ Viva - hope your family is going to be okay. The incoming storm looks like a biggie and increasing in strength faster than expected.
