    Thanks for all the feedback.

Forgot to say of course our current bed is a very nice king size chunky pine base varnished in an 'antique' colour, slatted base and some matching underbed coaster type drawers which any NP would be welcome to have. Current mattress is sprung 10 years old and for the last 2 years we have had a 7cm memory foam topper but it is not the best quality and would probably be better thinner as it is not dense enough, Recently we bought a new double for the guest room with 2.5cm memory foam on sprung which is ok and DD2 got one of the rolled up dense memory foam which seems quite firm and comfortable but not sure how that material would stand up to 11.5st of me every night, it is only about 8 inches thick which seems thin for a mattress.
    I think....

What are owner/occupation rates high in Berlin or do most people rent?

I believe Phil Spencer took two wannabe investors to Berlin to invest. He was certainly in some German city - and it was all explained in that programme, about what people do etc.

Found it, it was Berlin. Series 6, episode 4. http://www.channel4.com/programmes/relocation-relocation/episode-guide/series-6/

Not sure how many random passers by you have in your bedroom, but ... moving on from that query. An MSE solution can be provided with some simple(ish) maths.

    Inside leg 30" x 2 = 60".
    Circumference of bed = 250"

Take 4-5 pairs of old tights, knot them together as a band around the mattress ... job done.

Well, there are three of us that live in the house, and pass by that side of the bed whenever we want to get towels or bedding from the drawers under the bed on that side, or any clothes that've been put on the radiator next to that side of the bed to be dried/aired after being washed. I think we've all got jabbed by the springs at least once.

Thanks for the suggestion. You are very ingenious! I don't think tights would do much good, though. The springs have already pierced their way through the mattress cover, which is a lot tougher than tights would be, and have managed to scratch me through the sheet, although strangely enough without piercing the sheet at the time. The mattress was bought when we moved house in the summer of 1999, and really needs replacing. When I get round to it. Which may not be for ages because there's no deadline on it and I have difficulty doing things that don't have deadlines.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

My son is looking to buy, and I just want to give him moral support.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Well, you could use the tights band to secure some old folded towels/face flannels where the springs actually stick out ....

You need a new cupboard somewhere. A good old fashioned linen cupboard on the landing.

Had 3 herby dumplings and half a packet of sage/onion stuffing for dinner/tea :)

pN following on from the advice you got last night about nutrition. this is another main meal with out protien or veg. You post about "having a full belly" as an indicator of being sated, but it is not enough, it is not a dinner. You can make better meals than this.

The old folded towel idea would be great if I had the energy to implement it. Maybe I will one of these days. :)

No space for a cupboard - divan drawers make use of space that isn't useful for anything else.

I've now got a towel on my bed to cover over a spring which has escaped from the mattress, right where I lay too. It will do for now....
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Lydia, you're appearing more flat than usual. I know your challenges but there's usually more of a balance to your posts. I'm a bit worried about you.

Are you still seeing someone for talking therapy?

If there was any way of putting a deadline on the mattress, that would be amazing. 15 years is far too long to have even an apparantly unbroken mattress. Broken springs etc are going to really affect the quality of your sleep and affect daytime you. Perhaps you could copy michaels eventual choice if you could purchase online? It sounds like anything might be better than the present arrangement.
