Some sort of soya or something is popular now.

I didn't know that. Thanks. Am I wrong about paraffin wax from crude, or do they use that too?

Weren't whales involved at some point?

I know whales were used a lot for lamp oil. I've no idea whether they also made it into a solid version for candles, but it would be interesting to find out.

In other news, DS has had a special "options" assembly, and I've been to an evening meeting where parents were given the same info. We are not so sure that art may be suitable for DS. He is hearing conflicting information about whether he needs to include pen/pencil/paintbrush work in his portfolio. If art won't work, then the only other thing in that box that's remotely possible is philosophy and ethics, which he's not keen on but thinks he could manage. I've told him to have another talk to his this year's art teacher about it.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

James loved philosophy but then that was always an interest of his....he went onto doing it at A level too.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Funny, he's such a thought ful chap that I rather thought philosophy and ethics might be up his street. On the other hand, thinking that way can quickly lead to over thinking, which might not be too help ful.

Oh dear, its lunch time and I haven't even had breakfast pills yet, still in my dressing gown. I was going to splash out and get our favourite seafood salad for supper, but I am too cold and a bit queasy a gain ( hence no pills yet, though hadn't realised quite how late it is) so I'm not going to get sea food salad after all.

After invites to interview/audition at 3 universities (which were all for the same day but that is another story), the uni James is at has offered Josh a place without interview/audition.

We thought something might be coming soon from them as Josh received an email yesterday from their disability service, something James received AFTER the offer had been made.

Congratulations to Josh! Does he want to go there/is it his first choice?

Can you find out which exam board they use and look through their syllabus/ requirements etc.? (I'm sure this is a grandmother/ egg sucking moment...).

Congrats to Josh - great stuff.

I've told him to have another talk to his this year's art teacher about it.

Teachers that need more bums on seats will encourage anyone to take their subject, teachers in subjects that are over crowded will put off those that aren't going to deliver an A*. Sometimes.

It's one of the main ones he wanted as James is there and can help him settle in the initial first few weeks.

It's also one that James wanted him to get an offer from...so he can get him settled hehe.

At the moment, Josh is going through a wavering time about if he actually wants to go to uni as he is worried he will not cope with life, James has tried to put his mind at rest as he has seen his uni disability provision and speaks highly of it.

Maybe. Ideally I'd rather get it from the art department at his school. Sometimes exam boards have various possibilities but particular schools have policies about how they fit their students into the exam board's alternatives.

Only the unethical ones. I personally always try very hard to advise the student about what factors to take into consideration, and leave it to them to decide. If I think the student is excellent I sometimes say "We would love to have you do physics, but of course you mustn't just do what I want, you must do what's best for you."

However, even the unethical teachers more or less have to give correct answers to factual questions about how the school delivers the syllabus. If he doesn't get anywhere asking questions himself, I will ask them at the parents' evening in a couple of weeks' time. :)

James really is an excellent brother and all round quality human being - and a huge credit to you, Sue. :A

He prefers subjects where there's a right answer. He probably gets that from his mother. And his paternal grandfather.
