I think a bottle a day is a huge amount!

I've just tested the theory, and I feel great

Correct. I can't stand waste. If I'd not taken them sibling would have chucked them in the bin, I couldn't have that. So I had to have them. 225grams at 500 calories/100g.

Were they the inspiration for your yummy chilli? If so, they weren't that bad :)

I've always thought bottles were probably sort of rough historical norms of what we'd drink in an evening when we drank wine cos water would give us something or other that was no good.

Day to day drinking I wouldn't like to be that heAvy tbh, but I'm afraid to admit I used to be able to hold my own at social occasions. I don't think its a great quality. I don't like to be drunk. I could probably drink a glass now? Two? Will make me less expensive in the future. :)

People would have taken wine all day in wine drinking countries.

I suspect that it's an easy size to carry around and when they standardised bottle sizes they did it at a nice round figure of 3/4 litre ~ 0.2 gallons that was close to the various sizes being produced already.

There was an interesting interview on Newsnight last night - with the head of the Royal Society (summarised http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-30744203).

One of the things he said was that there should be a clear separation between science and Government policy. E.g. the debate about whether/ how bad illegal drugs are for you - the scientists can provide evidence as to how bad/ not bad the substances are. But even if the scientific verdict is that they are really not that bad for people, it should be equally valid for politicians to say that other considerations still trump that opinion (e.g. that it would be unacceptable to the majority of the population to legalise them and make them available without restriction).

I'd guess that whatever the truth about how much alcohol is or is not good for you - I'm pretty sure I'd function even less optimally than I already do if I sunk a bottle of wine every night i.e. there are social as well as strictly 'biological' considerations too.

The summer house has lost some of its felt. Grr! Those annoying things that are not sufficiently large to claim on insurance but will cost a lot to put right.

Supposedly Doctors drink and smoke well above the national average. I've always wondered if they actually do or if they are just more honest with researchers.

I have a friend who is a GP. She drinks far more than she should. And far more than the average of my drinking friends.

Yes, exactly, this is what I mean. Like wise beer measurements.

Purely anecdotally, and not very reliably, an acquaintance in Na and AA tells me doctors are the 'worst' there.

That said there is a pilot I know who is the reason I will Never fly that particular airline.

I think a huge difference in alcoholism is really just what people drink and whether they have jobs or not. One is deemed functional. (One of my parents is a 'functional alcoholic' ). Depends really what one thinks of as functional. Not all things begin and end with what job you have and hold.

    DQWD:

I struggle with keeping my drinking in check. It's never caused a problem at work but I am the classic 'one's too many, two's not enough'. I gave up once for 6 months and TBH I think that is going to have to be my future.
