I think everyone who didn't have to live through the war is lucky not to have done so. It's a combination of things to be grateful for... the fact we don't have to live in fear, that 25% of our housing hasn't been destroyed, that the houses we live in are safe, warm and secure, that we have food on our table, that we don't have coats that double up for blankets... the difference in 70 years is mind blowing.

And much post war to be thankful for... council houses and the NHS to name but two.

Grandfather was in the air force. Due to go on some mission and his papers were blown away the day before. His commanding officer refused to let him join the team without papers, so the rest of his group went without him. They never returned.

I got bought a diary for Xmas. I hate being bought diaries. It was from somebody who doesn't know me from Adam. But I've found a use for it.

It's a "good diary" in my mind as it's A5 and week-to-view.... so it's sitting here beside me and I'll be using it to jot down when I see good TV programmes advertised, or when I stumble across some future/local event (e.g. a market, or an event) that I might consider going to. Also, I'll jot down in it when Lidl have an offer on I'm particularly interested in investigating.

So it's my "Diary of Random Things I Don't Want to Overlook/Forget".

It should stop me spotting great things to see/watch/do that I then forget about until after it's happened.

This Thursday it's Lidl front door mats :) Not the one I'd like (£20), but one that'll do the job for £5.

Posh Alert! My diary cost 59p from the card factory.

I nearly, cheekily, suggested you needed an independent judge of it all :)
It all sounded so much "totally my thing" - and now you've said what was actually served it's even more "wish I'd been there".

    Glad it went well.

Jason Donovan just got caught out on Sunday Brunch. He opened with "I've got an allotment (cue: photo of his produce)" and they said "You grow your own ingredients?" "Yeah" he said .... then the presenter asked him a question about carrots and he said "I'll be honest, I've got somebody that does it all for me - I just turn up and pull things out of the ground"
  • I think I'm nailing this list of "Would you really use a SC? What would you really be likely to make with it?"

It's coming down to: kebabs/kebab meat, meatballs, (stew)/dumplings, beef in gravy, try a curry, try a chilli, leek/potato soup - and, banana bread.

So I think .... I really could use it.

I am trying to separate "could" from "would" here. I needed a "would" list, not a "could" list. There are 1000 things one COULD make, but it's WOULD you that matters.

I've got a really nice pork and lentil casserole recipe you can have !!

it must have been an oppressive horrible time; we were practically a police state with ID cards and armed police. Loads of people were relocated, bringing TB from the cities to the countryside.

I'm always up for recipe shares. :). And I ADORE lentils.

Pn, I'm kinda surprised you don't. Non meat protein source, so no nasty meat to fiddle with, very good value, and you like other vegetarian things. Crank books love lentils don't they? And they are great for Indian flavours too. ( I have a cranks book but have not read it for years and years and years...might be revisiting it soon).

Presuming I stay ok for food, i'm probably due a reread of some of my vegetarian stuff early this year. About this time of year I often want Asian food, and my repertoire got a little better last year thanks to a resolution to improve. Its not where I would want it to be, but its more confident. I'm sending a friend one of books on this endeavour because they want to do the same this year.

We eat a lot of food that happens to be vegetarian but I feel its time for a brush up. My food problems and not eating and stuff really made meal planning very difficult and grocery bills have crept upwards because there have been lots of 'I cannot be bothered grab something for yourself please' days. I need to get rid of those this year as they are budget killers.

RP is really reluctant to eat from freezer if I batch cook. My stand on that is if the food is there and its not wanted its not my problem and the requirement is to be self provident. I don't think that's too harsh? ( I provide food that's liked, but its not perceived as fresh...if fir presents it its received brilliantly, so I think its entirely about perception not the food).

I'm feeling that maybe I should try and make this the winter/spring of mastering the slow cooker or giving up with it for ever. Pn, if you got one we could struggle through together, though you will probably master it immediately! I'll have to dig mine out from under the alter in the cheese room.

Now that sounds really good! :j Might even get us to get our slow cooker out of its box - I really relate to Nikkster on that front! :o Assuming I can find the box of course - since we've been clearing old home OH has a tendency to put random things from the kitchen cupboards into the loft. <rolls eyes>
The first three tagged with this are: Cheesy Spud Soup, Shredded Beef, Donner Kebabs.

The cheesy spud soup sounds good, but I'm not sure about the donner kebabs... Don't they need grilling?

Wartime story... Bomb dropped on my Dad's Grandparents' home in London. Covered cellar where there was a hundredweight of coal stored. But the bit I love is when they went into kitchen they found that though otherwise untouched all the cups which had been on cup hooks had fallen off their handles. So there was just a row of cup handles hanging off the hooks. :rotfl: (Just one cup survived intact, which is one of the things I still need to pack up from Old Home.)
