Having just got in from work I am about to tuck into a microwaved macaroni cheese. I have nut roast envy.

DW is upset, so I have altered your post. :)

She says that I should have said crudit!s rather than carrot batons, but the fact remains that we just have the one staircase. My brother's house in Manchester has a second staircase, plus what he refers to as the Back Passage.

Oh, silly her, I was just pleased at the coincidence of the similarity. :)

I love red cabbage too. Tbh, savoy is the only cabbage is don't love, and I don't dislike that, its just not one of my favourite things. Cabbage ( amoung my other favourite veg) should be eaten in moderation if you have thyroid issues though. :(. And I really desperately missed it and other veg in the great food saga of last year.

The virgin flight landed safely, thank goodness. Apparently it looks like a problem with the landing wheels at the nose.

Question: Why turn back? If you know you won't need your landing gear until destination, isn't it easier to keep to flight plan and land with reduced fuel at destination?

I just asked DH this. He said combination of two things..

    1) Virgin will have had engineers on standby and their own repair hangar ready at Gatwick as it is a home airport.

    2) America doesn't take too kindly to airlines knowingly turning up in their airspace with a broken plane and causing an emergency.

We have a nut roast made, from scratch, every Xmas Day. It's so good you can do entirely without meat, even for meat eaters. It's a cranks one and we've had it every year for probably 25 years.

Having eaten it every day, twice a day, since Xmas Day, I even made a turkey/nut roast sandwich for the road.

I love a good nut roast. They are often very calorific though.

I made this one a year or two ago and it was very good indeed.

Was having a lovely sleep. Have been woken by police helicopter making repeated sweeps overhead

Poor Viva! Hope you got back to sleep okay?

Why don't they use small model helicopters? They only need to carry a camera, after all. So, that's a cheap solution that won't wake everyone up.

The CAA requires operators of model helicopters used for this type of work to be trained, but that's hardly an insuperable problem.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

Thanks zag. You're up early too, hope all is ok with you. The helicopter was overhead for about half an hour to forty minutes then went, after which I went back to sleep again. Overall not too bad, will still have got about six hours total.

...we used to but our house now seems to stay warm all day though the heating goes off @ 8.30am. If anyone can face digging up all their floors and re laying with insulation, the heat cost savings are great ....but the actual pain of doing the work is almost unforgettable ;)

Ooh - this house could do with better insulation, after replacing the windows, I think the next move will be underfloor insulation and/ or wall insulation (though I'm not quite convinced that solid wall insulation is a great idea - sounds like it could cause damp?).

All of the carpets will eventually be coming up (they are liveable with but not keepers). Not sure what I'll end up doing flooring-wise really. There are floorboards under all of the carpets, but not sure what kind of state they are in/ whether I'd prefer carpets in living areas. The kitchen has (it's original?) red quarry tiles, which I plan on keeping.

I've seen some tiles which I love for the bathroom (floor and probably walls too), but they're rather expensive :o so I'll have to see what kind of budget I end up with. Definitely no carpet in there!
