Similarly as recently as last year (? ) I was told something fascinating about basal metabolic rate that I don't recall reading...or at least taking on board or understanding, before and that I have never seen on popular media about weight loss and infact flies in the face of what we seemed to understand.
Unfortunately when I 'be tried to put in writing before it hasn't worked very well. I can explain it with an envelope and a pen to draw the little curve graph and then repeat what I was told. Its something I keep meaning to read more about, but don't.
1) Can you find the thing you read, online, and point us to it? Or did you read it somewhere we wouldn't be able to access?
2) If I have breakfast, I am much hungrier all day and eat a lot more than if I don't eat breakfast. Would the increase in metabolism resulting from eating breakfast really more than make up for all the extra food that I would eat because of being hungrier?lostinrates wrote: »I am way too scatty to hVe a favourite anything. I don't consider religious and ethical eating ( which covered most of it) a foible, ( and did no more for those than would do for family and expect family to do for me on those points, and let's face it, I talk to you guys more than family! I wanted to reassure Lady GDb that I had prepared all my cooking utensils how my aunt in law ( the one whose husband is a rabbi) had taught me, and the reason the pecans got over ground in the pestle and mortar was because I was hand grinding because I could wash that properly , unlike the kitchen aid. But I don't think I got a chance to. ) and had bought and extra cucumber in advance.
I often ( but by no means always) choose vegetarian or vegan options when out for ethical reasons, and I don't consider that a foible either. Though it is, other wise I'd do it every time I went out and always choose vegan,
DS did better than usual at trying unfamiliar foods. DD, OTOH, who is usually my "will try it, will probably like it" child, didn't do so well. It was VERY kind of you to provide her with so much cucumber. (She ate one and a half cucumbers during the meal).Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

i was told it by one consultant, gastroenterologist and then confirmed with endocrinologist., I'll try and have a google for good explanation tomorrow. ( though only relates to the obese)

this is exactly my experience too, ( also that I can feel very nauseous at breakfast time) my guess is we GEEL hungrier exactly because we have 'started stoking the engine. Its up to us to put coal on it not paper, and then not to over fuel it.
You have more than one husband???
I'm not dead yet.:D

Its easy to provide food that fitted with his ethical requirements when cooking to the other requirements. I knew they'd at least eat crudite.0 -
Congrats to Spirit
Hugs to PN and lir
Good luck to Mas
Glad DG and chewy had a nice meet
Has anybody started planning a suitable NPT meet for when Gen is over here? And if so can I come? So if it's in London please could it not be on a school night or I shan't be able to get a sitter who's willing to stay up late enough.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? I find it terribly funny that Doglet has feet like a Bassett Hound. After all, don't Bassetts make Licorice Allsorts?
I felt sorry for Big Dog. It was lovely to see her bounding along some of the time, but there was an air of melancholy about her. Maybe she is in a lot of pain, or just feeling terribly old and tired. I couldn't make out whether it was that, or I was projecting my feelings about her?No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

I think she is a bit sore and stressed. When they hold their ears tight back and pant they are sore / distressed. People often think they are happy/ warm/ just being dogs. She IS old.
, and she is tired. Sometimes its hard not to let them potter on like that until its more urgent.
She's beautiful when she bounds about, happier. So, bounding and all the things she's been denied this week, then a long sleep with her head in my lap on the floor. A vet who is the cat specialist is doing it. I asked for her as she's seen big dog the most since 'her' vet left ( re stationed in an Army move with partners job). We saw her a couple of weeks ago and we discussed it then, including her offer to come to the house ( off the books) and my suggestion it was probably better to do her by their freezers.
.
In one sense its easier because I understand the physical practicalities of practise, and a dog her size makes some practical issues. I asked some months ago what day collection day was. Wouldn't be an issue for kiwi. With big dog......it can pose certain practical problems.0 -

I ?
Was she ok on the way home, I was slightly concerned, that change of normal supper after a not inconsiderable amount of crudite!
She was so well behaved. Also, she does speak pretty good dog. Not her problem if other London dogs do not. I don't want to cast aspersions on the nature of your late mother in law mind you!
I think you and your family must be doing a great job, its so hard for her poor little girl. Yet, she took everything yesterday in her little stride.0 -
She normally gets some vegetable bits. Tonight, she had the base from the lettuce and the tops of the peppers. And some spinach.
What she does not get from us, ever, is raw meat, but she had absolutely no ill effects from the bit of lamb FIR gave her.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

Good. Phew.
They need much less pure raw meat ( in volume) then they do the commercial biscuit of the type you can buy at supermarkets.
Did you see the block it came off? Big dog and dog dog eat the same amount ( different metabolisms further dis bunking the calories in and out thing....) and that's one of those blocks twice a day. Its not that much really.
On top of that they have some meaty bones, and marrow bones, some veg and food safe left overs. I do not count that as calorific requirement for simplicity, but count the veg and bones and extra offal as 'balance require ment'
As she liked the raw lamb it would be worth trying adding some raw bones into her diet, even just in the summer, for her to gnaw in your garden. Saves on the tooth rushing and the poodle parlour......or the dental bills at the vets
.
Only one of my animals has needed a dental ( mauve squeaker) the one who eats least raw,( now that she's become an indoor cat and doesn't hunt as much,.......she still gets chicken wings, but not often enough:o)
You could try doglet on chicken wings. Its only COOKED bones to be wary of. Non weight bearing bones are best, wings are a common starting point because unless the dog is like big dog and just swallows them whole they involve some chewing and interest. If she seems too keen to swallow whole, you hold one end till she has the idea its a chew then swallow game.

Hi, popping in from lurkland! Regarding breakfast, when I was on a low-carb diet having breakfast at about 7.30am (usually boiled egg/ham/tomato) I did not feel hungry again till at least 1 or 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Before going on that diet, if I had a couple of slices of toast I was starving by 11am! I do think that if you are not hungry then don't eat! Sometimes it suits me to have 'elevenses' and then an early dinner.
I think it was Joanna Lumley had a saying which went something like:
"Don't wake up Mrs Appetite if she's asleep"
*slopes back to lurk*
You all have a good day Nice People
