Do any NP know about compact cameras? Need a better camera for our holiday, I know DSLR is 'the way to go' especially when it comes to showing off at kids school plays but I reckon on holiday a compact is just so much more practical.

We use one all the time for work and hols and it's great.
I think it was about £90 a couple of years back. It's at work and I can't recall the brand name but it just goes in a pocket and you can choose the res you want to use (high, med, low) which is better for making prints or albums as iphone pics are a bit low res if you want to print them largish size.

You're in my part of the world, fc?

I could wander to the NEC and look for a lady with a smelly thumb?

Sounds horrid, by the way. I hate bothering the NHS urgent services. Our local MIU is excellent and mostly empty. Most people seem to go to A&E in other towns, still.

They will also be dropping more heaters off, probably tomorrow or the day after.

Well, immersion heater still works, no idea if I am supposed to use it but I needed to be clean and it warms me up/soothes my joints.

Now feel all nice and snuggly.

    Clearing ice is not necessary.
Just start the car, turn the windscreen blower on max and rear window heating on. Then loiter a bit. That's how I do it. :)
Before I used to loiter and have a smoke, now I just loiter.
If the ice is really thick, I use de-icer spray.

DD and I scrape the windows of the two front doors while the car clears its own front and back windscreens. It's quite quick, and a LOT easier than scraping the windscreen used to be before we had a car with a heated one.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

End of year feedback meeting with my line manager last thing this afternoon (let's ignore that there are still 5 weeks left - the year is over apparently)...

...A surprisingly pleasant experience! Phew :)

Our car has an electrically adjustable driver's seat. I thought it was a load of old tosh, until I discovered that it remembers the seat and mirror positions for different keys. So, when DW uses her key, the seat is right for her, and when I use my key it's right for me.

Nobody drives my car but me, so the seat just stays in the position I like it. :)

Well, been AWOL as I had a bit of an accident.

Oh no! Sounds very painful. Hope you cope all right for the show.

Sorry to hear that, especially as you work with your hands!

That whole judgement of whether something's an emergency or not is a problem isn't it. You don't know.... you don't want to make a fuss, don't want to bother anybody ... so if it is 'fixable' with some plasters you soldier on.

Glad the man told you you're whiffy :)

If you have the kind of thing that probably ought to be seen to, or needs an X-ray, or whatever, but can wait a day or two, then my top tip is to go to A&E at 7am. You get seen quickly, and you don't feel you're bothering them too much because they haven't many other people to see. The time I tried it (child with suspected broken finger needing X-ray) was a Saturday, but I suspect it works quite well on other days too.

Mrs Generali has had success in the past with Nikon digital compacts. This sort of thing:

Theoretically, I'm on call through the night. I'm mostly used for vibe sending though: strokes, sore thumbs, general malaise and unidentified sadness. That sort of thing.
