... only stay if you are physically and mentally prepared to defend in these conditions.
I've never been a hero. When I was younger and there was perpetual fear of another war etc, I used to dread the fact that I'd be called up, conscripted. That feeling lasted until I reached 40 when I felt "safe" that I'd be deemed too old. I'd have just had a breakdown, cried and gone to prison for not willingly being conscripted0 -
I'm not a gardener but I think that for plants that will grow from cuttings you dip them in a hormone that encourages them to set roots to hugely increase the chances of them 'setting' (no idea what the proper word is).
The problem when you're dealing with experts is that for some of them the difference between a 55% and 56% chance of success is hugely important whereas for the rest of us the gap is more like 0% to 50% because we get the basic stuff wrong too.0 -

The mental bit bothers me. We're moving house and are looking at a more 'bush' area so bush fires are going to be a part of life.
At the moment we rent. Am I going to hang around to protect my LL's house? No fricking way. Not in a billion years.
When we buy a place. Hmmm. Well maybe. Am I going to do the things I need to do to fire proof the house a bit? Hell yeah! Am I going to leave my little palace to burn? No way! Really? Well probably not. Gonna die to save your house? Not so much. I mean that feature wall in Burgundy Brown is super awesome but could probably done with another go with the sugar soap before we painted. Bollix, let's leg it.0 -

I think my minimum would be a (below ground) fire-proof store room, where you keep all your valuables/paperwork and stuff, so you can flee without trying to get Great Aunt Mabel's treasured vase into the boot of the car.....
It wouldn't need to be a large fireproof unit, a 4' cube would be a good start, 8' cube better.0 -

Alternatively: shove it in a glass of water until you can see roots (copyright my mum) or stick it in some soil (copyright a mate of mine who gave me some herb trimmings).
PN - I have a fair amount of holly. I don't really like it, but its kind of handy having something mean and prickly next to the house. Mine has berries - you'd be welcome to a cutting next time I visit (see what I did there) but it might take a while to grow...
Sue - what a fabulous update. So pleased that the college experience is so positive0 -

Define fire proof. Bush fires can hit temperatures north of 800C (1500F). That's well above the melting point of aluminum for example.
If you have papers you like and you live in a bush fire zone, scan then and store them in the cloud. If you want to keep the originals at any cost then keep them off-site in the city somewhere,0 -
fire proof.

If you have to live in the bush, can't see why one of those wouldn't be the way to go...
You can do a lot with more 'normal' houses though as well...

You're welcome any time. I've only not invited you because you've your own house, it's a long way, you've other things more important to focus on .... and I feel very unworthy of your attention as I feel very very slack at the way I've progressed with doing anything in/around the house
Maybe the best time for you to visit will be a long/bank holiday weekend next year when the weather promises to be a scorcher!0 -

That's the surface temperature ... it'll be lower underground by several/many feet.0
