After School Trouble

    the person may well be under the old CRB checks, which i had when i was a school gov and helped with reading, I know the system is now DBS, but there personal.

    I know its hard, as I'm in process of making an offical complaint re a teacher at DDS school (secondary) but trying to write the letter, it feels likeI'm sitting an exam, I must have had about 6 attempts, as or me it is so hard not trying to put the personal element into the complaint rather trying to keep to the facts of the incident, but as a mum theres always going to be the personal side

    I would def speak to the head asap, before this happens to someone else / the head feels that you brought it later than sooner than its not important.

    there is nothing wrong with putting how you felt (personal side), as long as you are 'factual'. ie - stating a fact then saying how you felt or how it impacted on you.

    The reason I said 'school setting' is I wouldn't be overly surprised if the school said 'You have to take it up with the manager of the club, it is not school run'.

    There are lots of clubs held in schools that are not the responsibility of schools, but in this instance a small child was screamed at 'in the school setting' which makes it of interest to the school because little kids can't differentiate between in school and 'in school, but not really' imo.
    Yes, you do need to be clear about the lines of reporting for the club, I've been involved in two out of school clubs and although we were using school premises for one any complaints had to go to the management committee rather than to the school.

    However, if the woman has any role within the school as well, I'd want to make them aware of the incident.

    The after school club will come under the authority of the LEA if not the school. There will be a complaints procedure to follow. I suggest everything is now in writing or email otherwise she probably "won't remember"

    The after school club is run by the school itself now.

    I couldn't get hold of the head so dropped a letter explaining the situation and asking for an urgent meet up. Not heard a reply yet, will give him till lunchtime and chase then, don't want this dragged out any longer.

    My son has said that the carer has been nice to him since the incident so I guess that's something, at least he doesn't feel uncomfortable.

    Another teacher here, and this behaviour is completely over the top. As others have said, I do not think you could see her CRB/DBS but you could ask the school when they last had her checked out. The issue I have with CRB/DBS is that they only show historic events and they are meant to be redone every few years. Every September since my last CRB check, I have had to sign a disclosure form at school to say that I have not been arrested or charged with any offence. This obviously relies on staff being honest, but it is only ever retrospective.

    I think a meeting with the Head is important. It will not take away the hurt etc. but will make the Head aware of the situation. It may be the case that other parents have voiced concerns over this woman's suitability for the position and your meeting adds further detail to the picture.

    That isn't the issue with them, that is the point of them!

    A CRB/PVG/DBS shows that there is no official record of any information which suggests the person is known to be unsuitable. It should stop people who are known to be bad from getting into work with children or vulnerable adults. It is a very simple gate and really a very small part in the child protection puzzle.

    Far far more important are guidelines and behaviours. Removing the opportunity not just for abuse, but for misunderstandings. Ensuring all adults and children uphold minimum standards of conduct. You don't get that from the check, but it is far more important in the majority of cases.

    Update

    I had a meeting with the head today.
    He assured me how seriously he took my complaint and he and another senior school person had spoken to the after school club manager.

    It looks like she still doesn't really see what she's done wrong since she hasn't apologised personally to me or my son.
    But I've seen a change of behaviour for the better so I'm glad I've kicked up a bit of a fuss. She's more approachable and generally more easy going. Not sure how genuine this is or how long it'll last but I've been asked to keep an eye on things and head and another senior member of school will closely manage the person in question.

    I guess this is pretty much the response I expected for a first complaint.

    I'm sure if there's any more unprovoked attacks there'll be consequences.
