    Thanks Dave :A

No it's definitely not UPVC, where the panel has been cut it looks just like mdf, plus it's about 1cm thick, and will look dreadful I think.

I'll get out there and measure, they are fairly high up the wall, I notice them as I know they are there IYKWIM.

Right, the vent on the left is in use. The other two are redundant. The middle one is about 6 inches square and the right hand one is about 9 inches square

Any ideas to make this look a bit better gratefully received.

  • Hi all thanks for the warm welcome! I just had to get rid of my rescue chicky bobs as we had a drain issue we have to sort, which meant they where swimming, wasn't fair on them. Does big tummy lady have water belly or maybe sour crop? I had one who had a really massive butt, perfectly healthy though just huge! I miss my girls, and was horrid having to buy eggs for the first time in forever, but they went to a small holding and a pet conservationist so they have gone to the best place possible!
Better Days, Im not really sure he should be covering up vents, you could get new ones that slide shut if it's the ones I think you mean, we shut ours in the winter or else we get a gale in the Kitchen lol!
Happy finally have money in the bank I aim to save £50 for the kitty, happy because the lady whos doing the teaching course said I can pay in installments :D Just had a massive clean out fed up with the clutter, about a small skip full has gone this year, either to the skip or recycled in all fairness its because we do not need babys equipment for the first time in nearly 9 years YAY! Anyway have a good day all ! x

Better days, if humanly possible, get some bricks to match the original, remove the vents and cut out adjoining brisks to make a neat hole into which the builder can mortar enough bricks to fill the hole. May only need three on the smaller hole.

I assume this is double skinned? In which case the inside needs insulating as per the rest of the wall, "bricking up" and plastering.

    Thanks RAS.

There aren't any spare bricks knocking around (plenty of other junk when we moved in but sadly no bricks). Yes, there is a cavity which is insulated with rockwool. Calcuim silicate bricks aren't used much round here, so not sure how easy it would be to get some to match up.

Would probably be easier to use a blank plate, but does depend what is available.

mummy2threeboys well done on your de-cluttering :D, I still have boxes unpacked from when we moved last year, and some from when we moved the previous year, and some that had been in the loft of the bungalow for 14 years.

I really missed not having chickens while we were in the rental, they are so entertaining and not a lot of work (well very little for me as Mr BD cleans them out ;))

I must go home; dratted cough is making me tired.

Had an interesting if esoteric day recently; load of pears to learn to ID.

And a not so small pressie. Last year I gave someone stamps to send some graft wood. They lost my address so very kindly grafted the wood onto a rootstock and brought it to the event. So I am the proud owner of a small tree with big ambitions.

Hope to get a few other bits this winter. One group has 60 odd pear varieties ranging from 3cm high and 2 round with lovely flesh to 500g whoppers, of which some are not (currently) in the national collections and two thirds not even identified.

Also going to do Pitmaston Duchness and Winkfield from local trees. Not sure about Hessle, tends to be a bit of a hassle as it all ripens in September and goes off in a week.

And if you want to ID fruit, this is a decent place to start http://www.fruitid.com/

    Advice pretty please!!!!

We currently have 3 vent covers in our outside kitchen wall. One is for the extractor and the others are, I assume, for old extractors. The old ones look horrible and rattle. I asked our plumber/kitchen installer to cover up the old ones with a blank vent cover. He wants to cover up with a bit of what appears to be laminated mdf and seal up the edges with silicone.

I think it will look like a dogs breakfast and won't last either as water will penetrate.

Can you actually get blank vent plates (other people must have this problem), or is there another more obvious solution I haven't thought of?
i know there is a legal requirement to have a ventilation grill if anything ie GAS COOKER or GAS BOILER or GAS FIRE or any type of boiler/fumes in a room. i know gas board will shut down a gas fire if called out and no vent.... all to do with carbon monoxide etc. also vents should always be open when items are operating. a sealed vent from cooker hood etc does not count.
