I do hope not. The roads around here are still lethal, as they only harvested the last of the maize two weeks ago and mud's always dragged out of gateways etc.

Then there's dim and over-cautious, like the daughter of someone I know, who sat waiting for hours and then paid good money to a garage for 'diagnosing' a twig stuck under the car! :rotfl:

Can I ask what fruiting bush could I train up a trellis? The space is about a meter high by 6 meters wide. Any ideas? I'm thinking a thorn less blackberry but wondered if there was anything else suitable I might fancy trying. Sun about 2/3 of the day so I have been told.

You could get a couple of espalier apples or pears two rungs high on that but I would suggest going for cordons. It takes several years to get an espalier trained and fruiting (you need to remove the fruit until it is trained). Assuming you can grow the plants higher than the trellis (canes or stout posts) you could have 8 varieties with different ripening seasons instead of two gluts.

Alternatively consider making cordons or espaliers of soft fruit; redcurrants, white currants and gooseberries. Contrary to popular belief the latter if ripened make good desert fruit, tasting like Chinese gooseberries. We have one of the plots that is decidedly lemony and another has quite a complex winey taste.

For apple and pear varieties, pick Queen Cox or Sunset rather than Cox as they do better and if you are making cordons or espaliers, avoid tip bearers like Discovery. And if you must have Bramley go for Clone 20 but it would still probably be too vigorous for you. Conference is good; self-fertile but produces much better with a pollinator like Invincible or Onward.

If you happen to see good cheap trees in the supermarkets in the spring, buy, plant a foot apart and water over the summer; you can move them next winter when you know what you want to do.

  • But wait! What is the weird noise emanating from her vehicle?

Reminds me of the American lady who picked up a rental car at Heathrow but then, only knowing automatic gearboxes, drove it in 1st gear out onto the motorway. It managed a few miles on the M4 before the transmission expired.

It makes a big difference, out in the country, to have another soul around.:)

Oh, by the way the woman with the odd driving habits must've returned: she left her food waste bin........in the wrong place!

After such a long wait you must be pleased to see the light at the end of this tunnel. Wishing you both the best recovery; suspecting you will be needed quite a lot for a while.

Make sure he does exactly what the physio ordered and not too much.

Wishing you both the best Christmas possible.

Thanks all - He can only do a little walking as if he damages his hip he'll be in traction for 8 weeks. It's crucial that he only does what the physio has said as he has to keep the right angle on the hip. It's actually major surgery when they take the hip joint out & shove in a new one.
Heating isn't working - towel rails are warming up but the rads are cold.
It is pretty mild still so that's something.

Probably air trapped somewhere. Have you a rad bleed key, or is there an auto bleed point which isn't bleeding working and needs opening manually?

(We have the latter. It has showered water over the thermostat for the cylinder. Great positioning! :wall:)
