morning all,
Davesnave I know what you mean about workmen letting you down or being a pain, with us its the stonemason, started off good, and then just took the pith, so fingers crossed when it comes to the electrics being connected up and the heating system eventually being put in etc... we don't get messed around..
I have been mooching around the interweb for old radiators, but I cant find 6 nice old ones, so I am going to try and finds new ones that look ornate and old...
this is one of the things I will save every penny for, as I don't want to compromise on these... as they are key feature pieces of the rooms..
but with this the start of the new financial year household rates etc.. I need ebay to really work for me over the next few months... my business and private accounts...lol..
Davesnave... I can see it with council tips that unless its something they can get a remit for, then they will charge for everything else to be disposed of...Work to live= not live to work0 -

We got a cheaper old looking new rad for the bathroom, with more expensive range feet which I painted to match the rad. Its a triumph ( IMO) and saved a bunch, though needed some filing down to fit. IMO, the TRV and feet can really pull it together. I don't love our TRV, but needed a chrome one to tie it in to the modern towel rail in the same room, all in all it works I think ( ask Alf off forum for her opinion where she doesn't feel need to be polite to me)

When we realised we were not going to stay at the last house in Wiltshire, we opted to buy our *period style* new cast iron rads from Coventry Demolition (they can be found on eBay/their own website and despite the name they sell many items for restoration projects etc) - these were much less expensive than the ones we had already fitted in the new kitchen extension (Gothic style cast iron from Holloways of Ludlow) and the ornate Art Nouveau style type we fitted in our master/ensuite
As we needed quite a few it made sense not to spend £££ when we were about to sell up!
We still added very nice valves (the wooden wheel type) which definitely made the overall effect more pleasing to the eye!
We have - in a previous house - bought old refurbed rads, but having had an issue when one sprung a leak, I won't be doing that again.....
Dave - knowing what's best for your parents is a really awful decision to have make and I agree that, whatever one ultimately decides to do, you'll end up questioning whether it was *right*I just hope that in time, like you my guilt will evaporate.......

I was eyeing up plants while the family were looking at paint samples today. In the sunny border I want to plant some verbena bonariensis along the back and they finally had some today but I left empty handed as we were in a rush. Going to pop back in the next few days though.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0

I'm growing verbena b. from my own seed.
It seems to be easy, but whether it will flower this year is another thing....
Our plum blossom is excellent, so we're in with a chance, even on the greengage. Usually, it's blown away fast.
Not much to report, except Western Power's contractors are coming to trim the trees "within a month." They've just had all winter, but I suppose they work all year. They may make it before the oaks leaf-up.
I looked at the guy's map and it showed the leccy entering the house via the garage. It hasn't done that since 1988, if it ever did, so I wouldn't rely on their info!
Our cats are so gentle. Yesterday, Lila caught a vole and there was a bit of growling going on because Izzy was interested. I decided to let them get on with it, but 45 minutes later I returned to see both cats sitting one each side of the vole, which still looked perky enough. I said "Can I have the vole now?" and neither objected. It had ceased to interest them, so I took it away and released it in the field, where it nipped-off quickly, probably a bit traumatised, but otherwise apparently OK.0 -
Our cats are very different to each other. One is a great hunter and frequently brings small animals into the house. The other wants to be friends with any animals that he comes across.
I wasn't sure if the Verbena would grow easily from seed, hmmm something to consider.Taking responsibility one penny at a time!0
