  • CTC - your quirky pallet cladding sounds like great fun ;)

Like you, we definitely have *Marmite* houses, lol :rotfl: Everything was white (or one of those apple white type shades :p) here when we completed on the purchase mid December and gradually it's being turned into *our home* with colours most people would baulk at, such as a rich aubergine in the morning room :D

That'll take a heck of a load of coats of white emulsion to eliminate if we ever sell, Dave ;).....not that we have any intention of doing so!

Just need to get a wiggle on with removing that other 1970s/80s delight, woodchip wallpaper......

It started out really misty here this morning, but developed into a lovely sunny afternoon so more time has been spent clearing overgrown areas of the garden - as well as a quick trip out to a few local garden centres to hunt for large shrubs at small prices ;)

Nothing as spectacular as BD's cut-price evergreen honeysuckle, but we did manage to find a half-price Pyracantha and a vastly reduced Garrya :D As we've continued with clearing the area behind the wooded part (where my discovery of the hidden steps took place), we've realised that there will actually be quite a lot of new planting required as that area was almost totally consumed by ivy.

One thing we don't have here is lots of weeds - no brambles or stinging nettles whatsoever, which is a relief!

We do need to get more Bluebells and Snowdrops though - is buying them *in the green* ok? Have never done this before :o

IHS - fab pics of your specimens as always :)

Dave - great news that all the family, especially baby Sam are improving :)

LIR - curiously, despite always being urged to go for the bland, minimal look when presenting houses for sale, we have found that standing out from the crowd as our homes always tend to pays dividends - we've usually opted to ignore the advice of EAs and present our houses in all their colourful glory......and have rarely had any issues selling. Indeed far better for a house to stand out from the crowd, imho - when we did take an EA's advice and toned down a burgundy bathroom to cream, our buyers opined that they would have preferred it left as it was :o

Same buyers purchased the majority of our taxidermy collection as it suited the house so well and it was still in situ when they put the house on the market a few years later.....

Been a busy old week but I have just about kept up with your news. Have had house guests, my Mum's annual care home review plus babysitting my 3 grandsons.

Sorry to hear about family illnesses Dave and glad you, Sam and DD's OH all on the mend.

Succumbed in Dobbies the other day and have bought loose begonia corms. I have put them away in a cool, dark place and as I am away twice in March will think about starting them off sometime in April.

Lovely day here today but a bit cold when out of the sun.

Interesting CTC. I have a small supply of nappies left from my GD's last visit. Might be worth trying this for my main summer pots. I did try some water retaining gel some years ago and wasn't impressed.

I thought it would be pants.....:D

.......but it was interesting and worth a bit of experimentation. :T

I'm just short of the main ingredient at present. :(

Seeing IHS's agave, dormant on the windowsill, I thought: "Mine's been outside the back door all winter!" :o

    Looks OK though. :)
  • morning all,

sometimes we get nappies in at work, used ones ( yuk!!) but we do get the odd unused ones, so will give it a go when we get them in.. ( don't want to go buying any until I know it works lol)

not much happening to speak about really, except, going to phone ANOTHER local window firm to see if they phone back or make an appointment..

hope I don't get the same with finding a plumber, but with the experience some of you are getting, I think I might lol...

We've got a start date for the plumber/heating guy now, so there's a good chance we'll have everything done up in the lofts inside a couple of weeks. :D

The fitting of the insulation is still 6 weeks off, though....and by then it will probably not be so missed!

I don't expect the new heating to be live until about June/July.

Our log supplies haven't coped with the increased demand and our suppliers haven't kept up either. We're onto the current season's wood now, and it isn't as dry as the stuff we had in the sheds all through summer. :(

I'm going to hunt down some new suppliers, because the ones we have, ration us. I'll keep them, because they're friends, but it won't hurt for them to see some logs coming in from elsewhere! ;)
  • We haven't done too bad this winter with our own logs, we have bought a few packs of the sawdust blocks from home bargains at £2 70 odd a pack.. on the odd occasion

this year we will have to keep on top of wood cutting etc, we even keep smaller branches now..

Forecast has promised a nother dry week so I am biting the bullet and buying top soil to top up the herb garden, Then that will be ready for more planting and sowing this spring.....

Phew.....only four years behind schedule and it will be finished. Lol. :). Amazing how much the soil in the 'full one' sunk already though, a good half foot.....
