LIR - hope you feel better soon. You will be able to have a cup on the edge of the stove keeping warm all the time.
It is a lovely King of stoves you have there. It's nearly as nice as my Rayburn ;-)
Disgusting icy snow again & the wind is a chiller, just in from stuffing more hay in the feeders. Nice & toasty in the van.

    Hallelujah! I am saved!:j:j:j:j

Went to the local stove shop (12miles) and they weren't busy, so the two guys there took my door on as a challenge!:rotfl: Had to bring in a third guy at the end.

    Total time 30 minutes.

    Total cost £5. :D

    Get well soon, lir. :A

I actually come from quite close to David Austin roses so I migth pop there next weekend as I'm over that way. I really like the old fashioned type roses and the ones the bees can actually get to if they want to. The pergola is painted the same colour as you have used a lot at your place so I'm thinking a pal dish pink or a white/cream would go well. I like lemon roses but I'm not sure it would look right against the green. Thanks again for the advice.
I want more roses in the garden. I have a large bed I'm renovating this year. It's south/west facing but overhung by large trees from the old georgian estate next door so can be dry and shady. Any ideas?

We were there today.....it's actually about twenty minutes drive from our new house :D

Although our garden is established - and was originally extremely well-tended by the previous owner - it was left to go wild whilst the house lingered on the market and some areas need complete replanting ;)

Tbh, although there are some interesting areas - and I *adore* the wisteria rambling over the verandah - it's going to be great fun to put our stamp on certain parts of the garden.

The bones are there, they just need fleshing out, so with that in mind (and having created a David Austin rose garden at our last house) we want to re-establish the rose terrace here. Currently there are half a dozen (maybe more, it's very overgrown) leggy, unpruned specimens (plus loads more dotted around the garden generally) so today we made a start by buying ten roses to supplement the existing ones....also got some hellebores which I love!

In amongst the rose terrace there are all manner of other shrubs and perennials - have to decide whether to be ruthless and remove these entirely or not :o

Was hoping to have a day out there tomorrow, but the forecast is for snow tonight so we'll have to wait and see....

LIR - love your stove, although I, too generally prefer an open fire (am sitting nice and toasty by one of ours now!) and am so pleased we don't have woodburners in this house (think I'd make an exception for that beauty though :D) Hope you feel better soon, btw x

Dave - great news that you're saved, although, having not read the last few posts I haven't a clue what you're saved from, lol, only that it has something to do with a door (a stove door?).....anyway, well done ;)

Love hellebores too! I have about 12-14 in my garden and they are currently at different stages of flowering. Have given away loads of seedlings over last few years and noticed the other day there are loads more popping up!

    Dave's saved :D:D:D:D
Glad you got it sorted for the cost of a bit of petrol and a fiver.

Phoebe hellobores are one of the few plants in our garden too. Little ones popped up everywhere last year, presumably self seeded. I love wisteria too. Maybe at the next house, we wont be here long enough to plant here. Exciting for you planning your garden. Great escapism imagining the garden in high summer when there is snow on the ground.

Old dog is very confused this evening refusing to settle. In the end it seemed that she wanted the left over cauliflower cheese which was in a tub on the worktop ready to give to the chickens tomorrow. Gave her a little mixed up with rice which seems to have satisfied her. She is having more and more unsettled spells (not unlike the weather), it maybe that she is very gently sliding into senility. Daft as a brush lurcher not happy today either as it was very windy at one point. He doesn't approve of wind.

Do hope tomorrow is a better day for you LIR, and you get some good quality rest tonight.
It is a good idea to be alone in a garden at dawn or dark so that all its shy presences may haunt you and possess you in a reverie of suspended thought.

  • {{Hugs}} to Old Dog BD, bless her.....and what a yummy treat for her - you've got me wanting cauliflower cheese tomorrow now ;)

I don't blame you not wanting to spend a fortune on the garden at your current house if it's only going to be a temporary measure - I wish we hadn't gone so overboard at the last house, but at least it was appreciated by our buyers, not like the chainsaw bunch, lol :rotfl:

It is exciting waiting to see what will come up here (garden-wise, that is ) - we've discovered plenty of snowdrops that we had no idea about, so I'm sure there'll be some more surprises before too long.....

No *proper* snow here as yet, although there was a light flurry earlier.....has got blooming cold again and extremely windy too :(
