    Thanks alfie :):):)

No idea what builders charge so is very helpful to get an idea.

You're right it needs to be sorted, the money was going to be spent tarting up the fireplace but it will have to stay 'untarted' now :D

well , the results of not doing it could be extreme... from your description/pic it seems the water could affect joists etc . another senario is you have mould in that room... health ! as long as your fire works.. ;):D

Oh dear, hadn't even thought about the joists. Doh, :othanks for pointing it out. I'll ask the builder to check when he does the chimney.

I have had one of those air purifier things going in the room since there was a leak in the bathroom last year, the lagging got soaked and I could smell the wet lagging through the floor boarding. Probably just as well.

Sleeping downstairs atm anyway as the paint smelll from the decorating upstairs gets on my chest.

On the plus side the freshly painted bedroom does look nice. And there is nothing functionally wrong with the fireplace

The price of wood has gone up here this winter. We paid £45 to £55 for a load last winter, this year its at least £70. Probably cheaper to turn up the CH and burn oil, but I do love to see the stove lit.

For anyone interested in how data from medical research trials can be subverted to meet the beliefs of the trial authors this BMJ article and the 'rapid responses' are well worth a view (although I admit it is heavy going ;) )

The vast majority of the responses to the BMJ article are scathing about the PACE trial, and this latest interpretation by the trial authors who appear to have no shame. http://www.bmj.com/content/350/bmj.h227/rapid-responses
Reducing worry that exercise or activity will worsen symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome (myalgic encephalomyelitis or ME) is important for the success of cognitive behavioural therapy or graded exercise therapy in reducing fatigue and improving physical function, concludes a new analysis of data from the PACE trial, reported in the Lancet Psychiatry.1

The trial authors make this claim despite the fact that after participation there were no clinically useful improvements in employment, education, benefits claims or objectively measured physical disability.

It is scary for everyone, because this research trial is used as 'evidence' by the NHS, insurance companies and the DWP to recommend treatment approaches. It is additionally scary that the 'peer review' process of the trial protocols and data interpretation has spectacularly failed.

    Rant over :o

Thanks for the info re builders CTC.

    Can't sleep?

When I was first ill I had dreadful insomnia. At the time we had an old Lab who was always up for a walk so we used to go for a wander round the village at 1am, it was lovely, quiet, no-one around, and was summer and the smell of the honeysuckle and jasmine was divine. Only problem was that his recall was pants, not usually an issue as I could move faster than him. But there were occasions that he vanished in someone's garden and I was standing on the path giving stage whispers of Ben, Ben I've got a biscuit :o:o whilst hoping the householders didn't wake up and ask what an earth I was doing.

Not really the weather for wandering around outside in your jammies this time of year though.

And more cold weather forecast for today, although it looks like we may miss the snow here in the East. Are you managing to keep warm in your uninsulated splendour Dave?

The weather's not been cold, Better Days, so the insulation, or lack of it, hasn't had much impact. That will probably change a bit in the coming few days, but right now there are very strong winds, so when we cut out another section of ceiling today, any heat we have will be off and out.:(

We're doing it one or two board widths at a time, so it'll be closed up again tonight. It wouldn't take a day to do it, but the ceiling is being strengthened, so it's the carpentry that's holding it back.

Your lead flashing is probably leaking on one side. We had that, so until recently, there was a table in the loft with a bucket.....:o All weather-tight now.:D

I agree, your man's price was OK.
