Berberis darwinii is free if you can be patient. It's a car park plant, so lots of lovely berries to plant (in my case, from Lidl/Halfords:D)
In the first year they only make 3" or so, in their second, about a foot, and in the third they really take off.
So 62p isn't bad, if it saves you a couple of years. They're not easy from cuttings. :T
Just took cuttings today another supermarket shrub, cornus.
Yes, might be some snow, but the man who delivered the plasterboard today claimed to have inside knowledge of -10c here next week. I think that's how rumours start! :cool:0 -
I started my chili seeds yesterday
I feel I should be doing something, but then I remember the 'season' is 4 to 5 weeks later in Scotland so anything that germinates would be awfully leggy before it could be planted out.
The Royal Caledonian Horticultural Society Spring Flower show isn't until 28th & 29th March, for example.0 -

Had hoped to attend this year as not been before but duty now calls in Ireland. Have you been and did you enjoy it?0 -
Alfie, that's a much better quality sunset than we had tonight!
I have a misty grey shot as my screensaver at present. Took it a few mornings ago. The usual scene from across the road.....
I always change my screensavers with the seasons.0 -
thats a beautiful scene dave ! hows your family newby doing ?0

I'm crap at taking photos lol..
those pictures are beautiful, very magical and mystical..
thanks for the info on the berbs .. think I might go and get them, if they are still there tomorrow...
I have noticed on FB loads of people have started sowing tomato seeds etc on their window sills etc.. surely unless you got a good set up, this is a tad early??Work to live= not live to work0 -
I like taking photos of the same scene at different times of the year and, well, it's convenient with that one!
I'm lucky having a photogenic town just under a mile away. Last Saturday, I stopped the car and took some of another village from about the same distance, but when I put them on the 'puter they were disappointing. I've come to the conclusion that the evergreen trees make a real difference at this time of year. People bang-on about leylandii, and similar, but they make a real contribution in that photo.
Of course, if they're next door........:rotfl:
Sam is settling-down pretty well, alfie. It's all about establishing routines at this stage, as you'll know. A bit like looking after animals really! DW will be going up to see him shortly, and to give Mum & Dad a bit of 'us' time.0 -

It's unnecessary anyway. Perhaps with peppers it's worth getting under way early, but even with them, I hold off until February. Light levels indoors are all over the place just now.
I noticed how much later the hens went to bed tonight. Their laying has picked up and we are selling a few eggs again.0 -
Morning all,
I remember someone saying ( it was prob you Davesnave) that later sowings will catch up anyway, even though I have started to think about the garden, its just the odd flash thought lol, along with all other things I should start thinking of doing lol..
Rummer, hope everything is ok... please pop in and say hi...
I feel so much better after the last few days... stress, I feel as though things will start getting done now, even if its just me and hubby..
empty cardboard boxes are now made up, and placed on the landing, so whenever I see something, when I am passing, I can sort it on the go, so to speak, and put it into the right box... farm auction, general auction, keep, TIP...
even though we moved quite a few times when I was younger, and since I left home this move will be my 4th ( first 2 I wasn't there for long) I really hope this will be the last, don't want to go through this again, lol...
I am dreading the day when my M.I.L passes away.. they bought hubby's mother's house, plus I thought I hoarded lol... you cant get a fag paper into her cupboards and drawers lol...Work to live= not live to work0
