So by inference it could be irresponsible to own a cat as as you say they can't be trained to an urban existence?

    You can't own a cat.

I have heard some people live with "indoor" cats but I can't see how you would actually keep a cat indoors if it didn't want to be there. Perhaps there are some cats who choose not to go outside but I've yet to come across one myself.

A few years ago, my daughter's partner lodged with a Chinese student and his two cats in an 8th floor beach-front apartment (yes, I know!)

So far as I know, the cats never learned how to work the lift. :)

No idea, but I have been complained at for shooting ducks or pigeons.........

I too shoot, ducks pigeons rabbits etc, and even foxes, but only when they are existing in such great numbers that we, or rather the local farmers have an issue with them.

I do for example have a responsibility to a farm on the outskirts of the peak district. It's a well to do area, money has bought in and it is at the very boundary of the town.

Guess what, the farmer is under threat that if he doesn't control his bunnies he will be prosecuted as they are eating the begonias in the back garden. Is it all much different?

When my GF moved in to the flat we later shared she brought a rescued cat - it was one no one else wanted at the shelter she worked in and was very nervous. It lived in our one bedroom flat for over 5 years.

  • the precise reason I keep my beautiful cats indoors is because of the psychos on this thread and people like them who live near me who entertain thoughts of poisoning cats just because a cat goes in their garden, which is psychotic, shooing away, yes, thowing water, yes, poisoning? vile, sub human and disgusting. There are enough psychotic angry self serving people around who think this way - and it's abnormal - only nutters harm animals for ANY reason. then you get the people defending their foul behaviour by asking stupid irrelevant counter questions to take the spotlight off their mental thought processes like "do you think a humans life is more important"

tell you what I think, cruelty to humans and animals either/or is typical of a psychopathic personality disorder

So, does this imply that you were sober when you wrote the following?

"Cats should be either kept indoors, kept in a run http://www.catrun.org.uk/ or you need to own enough land that your car will not travel onto other people's."

Leaving aside other considerations, if city dwellers kept all their cats indoors or in cages, they'd be overrun with vermin within a few months. Many humans behave badly. They did it years ago because they knew no better, and they do it now because they can.

Do you think the draconian laws required for the implementation of your ideas would go down well?

    Lead balloon comes to mind!

Sober as a judge (maybe even more so)

I have no wish for draconian laws (we have enough of those already) I just would like people to take responsibility for there pets, is that too much to ask?

As someone who found a huge Staffie-type dog, racing through his house earlier this week, I'd agree.

It's too much to ask with the legislation we have, however.

This is why I suggest people take practical measures to overcome the problem, rather than bleat about whose fault it is and how much it will all cost. (In my case, gates, costing in excess of £1k, by the look of it.)

The proper place for debate and lobbying about blame and punishment is with the law makers. :)
