After losing £20k on dodgy investments years ago I thought I'd play it a bit safer and so decided to buy an investment trust, Rolls (after the dip) and a VLS fund. Well, I@ve just lost another £1.2k.
I bl00dy knew it - I've been waiting for a fall for ages but tired of seeing my thinking go against the trend, I bought into the trend...
I wont be doing the same thing with housing - guaranteed the moment I buy is when it crashes.
Pretty depressed about this whole share-dealing business - lost an absolute fortune overall. Should have stuck it in a bank.0 -

Are you investing for the long term or trying to make a quick buck?0 -
I've been on here for years and medium-term investing so I know what you're getting at..0

Then stick with it and remember the odds are stacked in your favour if you persevere.0 -
I have been waiting for a stiff correction to see what reactions get put on here! Will be a good indication of people's real risk tolerance. I have already seen in another thread a previously "risk averse" person getting wobbly knees.
I am heartened at how my VLS 60/40 has been fending off these current headwinds so from my perspective I can recommend that product so far. Unicorn UK income is another story though but with a divi of over 5% need to remember that!0 -

Agreed, VLS 60/80 are our two ISA holdings, the money in 60 has dropped by less than 1.5% since the start of the ISA year.0 -

I know it doesn't seem to provide "stellar" performance when things are good but it certainly reduces the collywobbles when it all heads south.0 -

Have you actually lost money, or do you simply mean that the value of your portfolio today is less than it was last week?0 -

I've done Peps and Isas since early 90s so a fall like this is nothing to me - seen it all before - don't even bother to jump out and in again trying to time the bottom. The whole thread seems weird because the underlying assumption seems to be everything will always go up whereas we all know that is not the case so why all the hot air when we have a minor correction? If this is a media "perfect storm" what on earth do you call a 50% drop?
Incidentally I sold out of Unicorn as soon as the manager change was announced, thought the run was just too good to continue.0 -

VLS 80 doesn't seem to be faring as well though
i'm now about 6% down on the highest point mine reached and 0.5% down overall, drip feeding VLS80 monthly for the last 15 months
Which reinforces the oft spoken advice on here that monthly drip feeding helps smooth things out!
