You may not like it , but muzak has been proved to increase browsing and sales for the average customer. You think they would do it if it lost them money ?

Well they could at least use it to their full capacity by playing more music other than the same 6 songs on repeat.

Why assume they know what they are doing? Plenty of large businesses do things for daft reasons - and many come unstuck. Piped music is a controversial area and AFAIAA there is no definitive answer to whether it actually increases sales.

Of course, the providers of the piped garbage would have it otherwise but if the evidence was conclusive every store would use it - and plenty don't.

Morrisons would be unable to lower all their prices to match the discounters, they are completely different business models with very different overheads.

Where the discounters might have say 6 different brands of baked beans, Morrisons/Asda/Tesco etc stock maybe 20+

They have to store, have delivered and pay staff to stock the extra stock.

    Choice comes at a price

Morrisons also has a large layer of extremely expensive middle and upper management, which Aldi and Lidl don't. Tesco, Sainsbury's etc, likewise. Along with such an organisation goes a vast amount of corporate BS - very expensive BS at that.

I have a hunch that plays rather more of a role in the inability of the giants to compete than some observers recognise..

As it is I have Aldi, Lidl and Morrisions at more or less equal distance.

Morrisons isn't get a look, even if they match the price it will be on the savers range which isn't as good quality.

The ease of shopping in Aldi keeps me coming back, not having to check multiple brands and offers and knowing it will all be good quality is great.

Just to reinforce the point I was making, here is a headline from today's Mail:

"Here's thirty million more reasons why Tesco is in trouble: Struggling firm takes delivery of £30m corporate JET days after accountancy blunder "

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2780233/Tesco-takes-delivery-30million-corporate-JET-days-announcing-overstated-profits-250million.html

Apologists for the majors like to use the 'variety' excuse for the high prices they charge but the truth is much mire complex. It has a lot to do with the inflated self-importance of 'executives', living the life of Riley off the backs of the actual owners of the business they are slowly killing.

Its all about market research, they will match prices as long as you tell who you are, how old you are and where you live, they then track what you buy and how often you buy.

Aldi don't care who I am they just know that me and many like me keep buying stuff so they keep doing what they are doing.

  • Also if the piped music works, why is it that Aldi and Lidi sales are going up who don't have music playing, yet all the shops that do, their sales are going down?
