...The more the likes of Morrisons push these 'initiatives', the more they push me towards Lidl and Aldi. The days of vouchers, coupons and the like are hopefully behind us.

You don't want to be going to Aldi then; they seem to be the local kings of accepting coupons (as long as they are their own)

But they seem to have a strange policy that insists you give the vouchers before the shopping is scanned (I think so it then charges the appropriate price from the outset, rather than discounting at the end)
The amount of times I get stuck behind someone who doesn't know this and so after they have scanned their huge trolley of goods, it all has to be scanned again to refund and then the cashier processes the vouchers and scans the goods for a third time is amazing. And I'm usually stuck there waiting...Kind of starting to put me off what used to be a nice quick in and out shop :(

    My thoughts exactly.

If Morrisons want us to believe that they really are competing on price with the likes
of Aldi or Lidl, then they should just lower their prices accordingly.
They presumably know the prices at their competitors to be able to offer this gimmick involving cards and points.
    ..

Thats the whole point, the DID lower the prices of 1200 items at the start of the year, then a further 300 a few months after that.

THIS is to reinforce and support those price cuts by "guaranteeing it" dont get me wrong, the customer data is a large part of it too.

They may have lowered the prices of 1,200 items, but as someone who shops in Morrisons more or less weekly, I've seen precious little sign of it. Now that may be because my shopping trolley is unrepresentative. Or it may be because the items they have reduced in price have been very carefully selected to make a lot of show and little impact.

In fact for the things I buy, Morrison's are sometimes starting to look more costly than Tesco.

    I sense smoke and mirrors.

Even if it is (and I have some doubts) it's another cumbersome, unwieldy scheme involving data mining, cards and points. As has been suggested above, if they are serious, they should cut their prices. We'll do the rest.

It's hardly cumbersome for customers, carry a card and get a voucher for £5 every so often. The point of price guarantees is that customers can know they aren't spending more than they would elsewhere without having to spend a lot of time investigating all options.

I don't shop at Morrisons but would be very happy if Tesco brought this in. As it stands about 1/2 our Tesco shops give us a voucher because we could have got it somewhere cheaper, if it included Lidl/Aldi then it would be more often. I don't mind because I can use my cashback CC at Tesco, get clubcard points, money off my fuel, when my shopping is cheaper I get to cheap the saving and when it're more they give me the difference.
Having a signature removed for mentioning the removal of a previous signature. Blackwhite bellyfeel double plus good...

One of my benchmark prices to test supermarkets is powdered milk....£1.15 per 400g in Sains and more than twice that in Morrisons.

Morrisons would be unable to lower all their prices to match the discounters, they are completely different business models with very different overheads.

Where the discounters might have say 6 different brands of baked beans, Morrisons/Asda/Tesco etc stock maybe 20+

They have to store, have delivered and pay staff to stock the extra stock.

    Choice comes at a price

  • If they got rid of the piped music (same boring 6 songs on repeat) they would save over a grand a year per store in licensing fees.

You may not like it , but muzak has been proved to increase browsing and sales for the average customer. You think they would do it if it lost them money ?
