Years ago in York. i was walking down the street and someone very small asked me to ring the bell of a house as apparently they couldn't reach.
Next thing i knew they had scarpered and left me standing at the door looking like a lemon.
Little rogues, but your story did make me chuckle.0 -

Although I'm not sure if it's regional on not because there's a letter in our local paper this week about it happening, and the kids seem to be mainly targeting elderly folk....which I think is disgusting. The guy who wrote the letter calls it Nicky knocky nine doors.
We called it knocky nine doors in Northumberland. I'm ashamed now to say that I did play it once myself when I was a little girl. It involved counting 9 doors and knocking on the ninth, hence the name.0 -
"Cherry knocking"
Ignoring them will be the best solution

Interesting to see all the regional variations on the name (it was only ever Knock Down Ginger where I lived in London). We would up the ante by daring each other to knock on the grumpiest/angriest person's door or the local weirdos. Not saying this is why you are being targetted but better to ignore than rise to the bait. It is pretty harmless.
This has reminded me of another thing we did, telling my age here, but we unwound a cassette tape, tied the tape between fence posts and trees all the way down the street just at dusk and then waited for an unsuspecting person on their way home to get all tangled up in it.

It was called Knock UP Ginger in my part of Essex.
We only used to bother with the houses where we knew we'd get a reaction, so it's best just to ignore themEarly retired - 18th December 2014

I used to love playing 'knock down ginger' back in the '60's' in Essex. I remember my big brother teaching me, then a few years later he went all 'boring and sensible' and tried to stop me, no chance
I had a spate of this happening here a few years ago and once I'd worked out who the culprit was I had a word with his mum and it suddenly stoppedHis mum was mortified and very apologetic .

In Newcastle we called it 'Knocky Nine Doors', twenty years ago the kids used to do 'Budding' where they picked the big rose buds off the bushes and stot them off peoples windows.....my dad is a fast runner though, and after he caught one and shouted, it stopped.0
